Sure, you can use a sword while mounted but 128 range is still enough to poke things from critical distance (just outside one-handers range) with respectable speed, on either side of your mount. With little practice and care you can down a whole group of footmen just with Spear/DS Lance as you turn your mount away from them right as you land a strike* on them. Try doing that with any sword.
The problem with real lances is that after initial blow they're useless, you have to wait 3-5 seconds before you can couch it again (not counting the mount speed, just the "cooldown" period). During this time your lance is a long stick that's super awkward to use even against single footman (unless you have super high prof. with Polearms, even then it's iffy).
Within the time it takes for me to lance one troop, ride away, turn around and run in for another couched lancing hit, I could have downed four or five troops with a Spear or Double Sided Lance instead.
* Tuidjy's video is a great demonstration on this (I know it's Viking Conquest, but far as I can tell horseback spear works the same):

Light Lance and Lance also does the same thing but better.
but if I have to give the Double sided lance a little bit of credit is probably on what horse the player are using.
if the player are using Coursier and Hunter(Which is my go to horses), then the Double Sided lance is useless as those horses are somewhat vulnerable(I think the Hunter isn't)in melee, and combat on horseback with a Coursier would probably you running around the enemy doing maneuver stunts while poking them with a high speed couched lance and lance thrust.
but if the player are using Charger horses, maybe, just maybe the Double Sided lance could be of use, but by the time you get those Charger horses you will probably already have a lot of money to buy a 2 hander, because Chargers are super expensive.
Proficiencies might be a factor too, and I have to admit that I'm more toward using a 2 hander and a Polearm.
