How to make groups for battle commands?
There are some predefined groups,
1 = Infantry
2 = Archers
3 = Cavalry
0 = All Units

but how do I define my own groups, as there are controls available for groups 4-9 as well.

I want to put Jeremus into his own group, and make him stay at the spawn point, so he doesnt get injured in battle.

Go into your Party menu. Click on the unit in question. In the middle of the screen you'll see the unit picture. To the right of that is the group the unit is designed to be in. (Click there to get the drop-down to assign it to an existing group.) To the left you'll see the existing Groups and some blank ones. Click on an existing group and it will assign the current to that group. There is also an option to rename the existing group, but it's hard to tell since Warband doesn't really "highlight" things very well or show that the current entry has a "live cursor" in its text box. That's the issue
you're encountering as it's difficult to notice it. Just click on the group who's name you want to change then click on it in the top portion of the window to edit its name, IIRC. Just type after you've clicked it in the above-center portion of that window and you'll see it get changed.

PS - Yes, it's not very intuitive because the window doesn't easily give feedback that the cursor is active. Also, there's no confirmation to alert you to anything.
