To increase your party's speed, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- footsloggers slow you down. Keep your men mounted, companions included.
- unconscious people slow you down. Rest at an inn, or at least a castle before you risk traveling.
- a large army is slower. Do not hire people you do not need, especially early on.
- an unhappy army is slower. Use food, victories, or even free drinks to keep morale up
- many trade goods are heavy. When transporting, for example, ale, use extra horses in inventory
- the path-finding party skill increases speed. Have a companion specialize in it.
- avoid bad terrain like forests, mountains, etc...
- don't travel at night if you can avoid it. Rest and heal instead.

The number of footmen vs mounted cavalry, the number of total units in your army, the amount of weight you are carrying total. Less means best in most cases. :) Oh terrain and visibilty as well. At night you will go slower than day and when you reach hills and high plateau's you'll go slower.

There are mods, like Viking Conquest, where equipment weight and armor penalties slow you down on the tactical map, but weight from normal items (weapons, ammo and armor) does not matter on the strategic map, at least not in most mods, and definitely not in Native.

Only some items slow you down, namely trade goods like barrels of ale, bales of wool, etc... Those need to be counteracted with extra horses in inventory.

Viking is a frustrating start
and you cant attack them after being chased off

he is right, and mentioned most of the reasons, but I`ve also heard keeping horses in your inventory helps you be faster, and of course you travel faster at day.

From what I read, horses only help counter map-speed penalty from heavy goods. If you don't have heavy goods, they won't do any good (or even slightly decrease speed).

Hmm... Dont know, Ive read that you got to have a few horses per infantry to reduce infantry speed reduction, I am not sure about it though, but currently Im travveling with 10 horses in my inventrory xD

All testing I have done in Native, Viking Conquest, Gekokujo and Suvarnabhumi Mahayuth has told me that extra horses in the inventory do not help unless you have heavy trade goods slowing you down. On the other hand, I also always have at least a few extra horses, because they come handy when:
- you're trading, which many people do early in the game, to build a cash flow
- you're in the habit of raiding villages and robbing caravans
- you're playing a mod where you often loot trade goods from normal enemies, as in Phantasy
- you're playing a mod that has defined some food items as heavy trading goods
- you like to take risks with your mount, and thus need spares when it gets crippled

In my current playthrough I have 3 Coursers because they become crippled often so I just swap them out to prevent them from dying, I also have 4 other horses that I may use later on and I can catch most armies (mine is sitting at 115 right now). Would getting more horses speed it up and does the quality of the horse matter (Swaybacked, Stubborn, Heavy)?

EDIT: Found this, answered my question :)
Weight...|..Horses
<10........|..1
150........|..3
300........|..5
500........|..9
1000......|..13
