How do you manually level up companions?
Is it possible to control the leveling of named NPCs? So far, every time my NPCs have leveled up, it's been automatic and I couldn't control what skills they level up in. Is there a setting that I could change to allow manual leveling of named NPC companions?

I've never seen a companion level up automatically. They get the little + next to their name in the unit list and then you have to talk to them about their skills and you get the same screen as when you level yourself up.

Hmmm, maybe I screwed up and they haven't been leveled at all then. I'm like level 8-9ish and I haven't seen options to level them up. Then again, my companions often get knocked out or woundedn fights so that might affect their leveling?

If they are unconscious, they gain less experience than when they fight, kill and receive training.

Still, in the normal course of the game, they should be leveling up. When they do, you get an yellow message on your screen, and you have to manually assign stats, skills and proficiency points by talking to them.

Talk to them and ask them about their stats.
You should be able to get a level up screen the same as your character ^^

It should also be noted that some of them start out at higher levels. I believe Artimenner and Bunkuk start out a few levels up, whereas Ymira is pretty much a blank slate. Can't be certain since I don't know how you've been playing, but that could be the reason.

Also, not sure you have it, but it's worthwhile/necessary to level your trainer trait up as much as possible. Putting aside the benefits to your armies/castles/tasks late game, it's a perfect way to make sure you're getting the most out of your companions.

I think that's it. One dude is pretty high levels starting out 8-9 ish, and the other dude keeps getting knocked out in combat. I've solved the problem.

Thanks all.
