Of course, there are mods and home rules that make training less important, like for example, playing for the Light and using elves in The Last Days, or making a speed run in Native, or using just companions in Gekokujo, Perisno, Phantasy, etc.
But in general, if you have an Intelligence based specialist, and I in most mods I have at least three, it's worth having his training maxed.
I don't recall if I've ever "maxxed" Trainer with any companion in any mod. That would certainly be very helpful, especially in mods with high troop-levels. That's just a ton of points to dedicate to Trainer. (I am stacking it a bit for a medic in PoP that already has 10 in all medic-related skills, so we'll see.)
