The objectively best companion group to keep in your party at all times is:
- Alayan, Firentis, Bunduk (heavy cavalry)
- Deshavi, Baheshtur (horse archers)
- Ymira (strategist: tactics, engineering; training)
- Jeremus (medic: surgery, wound treatment, first aid; training)
- Klethi (outrider: scouting, path-finding; training)

Note the group lacks looting and trading. Those are both money skills, and can be ignored if you are a master at squeezing money out of combat and investments.

Ymira is also good for being a medic, she starts with some of that already!
If anything keep her as a back up medic ^^

Yes, as we discussed in this thread, Ymira has better medic potential than Jeremus. Slightly better, but better.

The thing is, Ymira can do anything, she is that good. So, while you can use her as a medic, it is better you use Jeremus, and use Ymira to cover other basics, freeing up Deshavi, for example, for something else.

Deshavi is my pathfinder, Klethi is the back up pathfinder and looter.
I tend to only hire female companions btw, if only Ymira and Matheld liked each other more... XD

I have 10 in my group and at least 1 looter and 1 trader. Only 1 is low 50's but, it's pretty easy keeping her happy enough to stay with pillaging and looting and battles. Any combination really is a good one as long as you can keep the majority happy which is pretty easy. Even the ones that gripe stay happy enough to stay with me; I haven't lost one yet. Been playing over 2000 days in one campaign. (I don't try to make King I just want to see if the AI will eventually take over the map) :)
you can google a convenient chart.
