You can bring a claimant to power, but in Native, you cannot marry them.
You have to either renounce your oath, or openly rebel. Be warned, it's a hard road.
Elective Monarchies, Elect people.
and when the king of a Monarchy dies. there is usually a debate on whether or not to honour his chosen heir, so even without an elective monarchy one could say that the king is still elected since his heir requires the support of his former vassals.(even among non-Elective monarchies)
not that its really related to the question but..
Yeah, outside of starting your own faction you can't really become king since characters in this don't 'die' out side of mods so you have no way to manuvere yourself into the succession line.
using a claimant to take over a kingdom doesn't allow you to become a ruler just allows you to change the ruler which might be beneficial in making alliances , and getting them not to attack you when you establish your own kingdom cause..they might like you (doubt this games that indepth but ya never know.)
starting your own kingdom requires you to take a city, or a castle while not part of a faction, which means waging war usually after you take a castle the faction you took it from will come to take it back usually with an army of around a thousand. which usually doesn't have the battle end in your favour sense they'll win through attrition eventually unless you are strong enough to demolish them with few losses each time/wave.
you need atleast 300 troops to garrison the castle(not a forced limit or anything just recommended to try an keep the odds balanced in your favour should they decide to try an take it.) and you should have a decent army of your own to travel with so you can demolish as many of their armies as possible so that they can't do anything more than raid you.
usually having plenty of archers, and heavy infantry is good when defending against a siege. Heavy infantry to absorb the enemy arrows/bolts. and archers to try an wipe out as many enemies as you can before they reach the ladders .
the same is true of attacking though. but generally when defending you want more heavy infantry so you can quickly kill which ever enemies dare to come up the ladder .
when attacking having more archers is good since the more you can thin them out with arrows the easier the fight will be going up the ladders.
if you're attacking hiding your infantry behind a hill, if theres one present so they can't be hit by arrows works.
though if they're heavy infantry and have shields leaving them out might be beneficial in that they can take arrows that might other wise kill your archers.
its really just a matter of tactical choice/preference.
in some castles moving off the walls an letting the enemy come into the court yard if you feel you have the superior units might be better. you can use the archers to pick them off from the court yard as they come up. and crowd them on the stairs as they try to come into the court yard which can work better than defending the wall - sometimes-.
To go it alone you will have to renounce your oath and then start sieging castles and taking them for yourself. You won't have any lords but if your honor is high then you will be friends with honourable lords. Track down honourable lords from any dead facions in your game such as Sarleon and ask them to join you
To rebel you will need to take land until the king refuses to let you have it. If you become marshall your controversy will rise fast and you will be denied land more frequently. It might benefit you to take a lot of land before you rebel. Hopefully you have friends in the kingdom of nords but they won't join you this way until you kill the kingdom of the nords
If you want to rebel and take over the kingdom of the nords by stealing their lords, find the claimant for the kingdom of the nords. Back their claim to start a rebellion and then start talking to nord lords and asking them to join you. You will want to try and get all of the nord lords to join you before you complete the civil war by defeating the nord king and taking his lands
Now, the nord lords love you but the new nord king is a total stranger to them. Take land til you are refused it which will be quickly if you just fought a civil war and have high controversy, rebel. Now go around asking the nord lords to join you, they will probably say yes since they love you and they dont know the new king. Get all the nord lords to join you and then defeat the new king to kill off the nord faction. Now rename your faction Kingdom of the Nords and your usurpation of the faction is complete! Stealing lords this way keeps the land relatively prosperous and will reuslt you in controlling a lot of lords who love you and will follow you into battle. Since they're all from the same faction they will mostly be happy whenever you hand out new land to any nord lord. Downside is you can potentially get more lords by only using good lords, and they're less of a pain to handle. If you like you can kill off a few factions and then indict any non-good lord for treason and give all of their lands to the good lords you have recruited, transitioning from a small kingdom into a stable empire
