How do you increase your "sailing master skills" so you can use more ships?

Do you mean Viking Conquest? You just put skill points in it.

I think that you get 1 ship at 1 skill point, and then 2 more ships for the next three points.

I think that level 4 skill and 7 ships was the maximum. But I never needed more than four ships. Three big ones to carry about 300 men, and one quick one to kite the enemy while I and my veteran warrior archers feather everyone without casualties.

This left me with one extra ship slot, which would get filled with prizes.

Actually, I am playing World of Ice and Fire and have 4 skill points and I think you answered my question that 4 skill points is the maximum. Thank you very much.
