At low levels companions level most easily from shooting shieldless enemies. Archer companions are much better at it, but not everyone's stats are good enough for that. On the other hand, crossbows are A-OK for everyone. In some mods, there are other weapons of choice for non-strength based characters: javelins in Viking Conquest, guns in Suvarnabhumi Mahayuth, repeating crossbows in Perisno.
Keep them alive. By use of tactics and putting them in the right group their chances of surviving combat go up a lot. I put them in the ranged group but giving them their own group is maybe even better. Melee infantry in front, archers behind them. Basic stuff.
After they gained several levels this way and improved their 1 handed a bit as well I give them a horse. Change their group to cavalry. Combat still the same. I play with mostly infantry and ranged, and companions on horses. Once you break your enemies attack and you see the first ones turn to run away, send in your cavalry to chase them down. Your companions being the only cavalry will get many kills this way. Give your companions 1h weapons with long reach, or just go with 2h weapons. I usually wait with the 2h weapons until they have some more health and very good armor.
Once they have charger horses, good armor and high 2h weapon proficiencies they often get more kills than me.
If I remember correctly it's even worse when having multiple different units.
ctrl-L
No that just gives them 1000 exprience, CTRL and L levels them up one level with each click. so thats the fasted way to level up yourself, companions and troops.
''In the Fire & sword Version the CTRL+L don't work ."
Do you know what's for Fire & Sword. I'm tired of slow leveling lol. The warband was easy to manage. Fire and Sword seems like harder to do
