I figured I could either quit my insanely long campaign or make some changes. So I got pissed off and went on the offensive. I took Dunwic, which took the wind out of East Engle's sails, then took Dorestad, Ribe and Tunsberg. Now the North Sea is quiet. Cantwaraburh is back to being the sleepy backwater dump it is supposed to be.
Only the Irish were giving me a hard time (for some strange reason), so I took Dubh Linn, giving them something to cry about. In each case, I took the only city belonging to particularly aggressive factions and that shuts them right up.
Tuidgy pointed out recently that there is a countdown on luck. It decreases over time and at a certain point, the player has no more "luck" going for them. It seems this luckless state leads to all manner of strange things? I'm not too worried about it though since I've probably spent the majority of my time in these games, getting by without luck because I always take my time.
My plan is to stick it out and see how far I can take it. I'm in a good position to run the map, all I need to do is not expand too quickly and keep the lands I've taken. By the same token, I have to be more aggressive so the AI keeps out of my way.
Smokingman managed to do it recently, so I'm inspired to stick it out now that I'm convinced it's at least possible.
I wish you luck with the rest of your game.
The forum has been organized into different sections. Your post about Viking Conquest got moved into the Viking Conquest section.
It's a little confusing to those of us who have been here for a while but eventually, this new system of organizing threads will become the new "normal".
Personally, I like the effort being made to clean the site up. It makes it a lot easier to know what the hell some people are talking about. You were smart and considerate enough to clearly label your thread in the title...which is also why it got moved so quickly.
People who want to talk about VC will manage to find this section...and if they can't, well, that's probably a good thing, in my mind.
2634 troops is a giveaway
Path of attack - Dorestead (all of Friese), then friended West Seaxe, took Tomtun, wiped out East Engle, moved up to Jovik and Bebbenburgh, got torqued with Danes and took Ribe and all of Danmark (solidifed right side of map), came back and took over Wales (leaving Yse Mon), up to Edinburgh, Breatann, Scuin, Cell. I did all of this without any vassal lords. Turned south and wiped out West Seaxe before moving over to NorthV. After clearing the whole right and middle - I put some love time in and got married (had a child) and built up to invade Ireland (7 ships - 305 capacity). Yse to Maistu and then around to Dubh Lihn - worked my way through Laign and then up and over through Connecha concentrating on one faction at a time. Rath Caltair and Ailech.
Barnejoy and Laithland were the final hold outs as both were island locked. I would run about 900 strong (although I could control up to 2600 by myself) and at max I was around 1250. On occassion I was ambushed by 4 or 5 lords with combined 1500 armies - wiped each out as I had about 80 calvary and ALWAYS ran an end-around. Ulfs armor and balanced godelic sword (41/16) - I didn't/couldn't use a horse. Good luck!
When you play this many game days it's possible for the AI to accumulate that many troops as long as you leave them alone. I was and still am affiliated with Seaxe king so yes he has that many troops cause I've never attacked him.
