Step 2: Give companions spotting and path finding skills, some companions already have a lot of both.
Step 3: Keep morale high, the higher the morale, the faster the party. This can be done by keeping the army fed, a few varieties of food should be enough too. Also avoid maxing out your army, 80/80 capacity for example will keep morale capped around average or lower usually and will slow you're army so it wise to not be at max cap. unless nessecary.
Step 4: Doing all 3 usually really helps in chasing parties, also don't be afraid to let slightly larger armies chase you for a battle. Many times over I've slaughtered warbands that outnumbered me even in 2 to 1 situations.
I don't actually know of any mod that stops/helps with warbands avoiding larger ones, but the above will really help and was a lifesaver when I figured it out, sometimes its possible to chase warbands half your size.
Sorry but you will just have to recruit companions and give em skills to really chase warbands good (It's really easy anyways and its good to have personal and leader skills while companions take party skills.)
You wouldn't have to worry about chasing warbands across the map if you could just move fast in the first place. In my hundreds of hours I've never seen an effective different way (so maybe again wait for someone thats a better M&B vet than I am)
Also useful protip that saved me too: Holding Ctrl + Space when moving across the map fast fowards alot so movement and warband chasing is made near instantanious. Careful though as you can easily accidentally run into larger and more dangerous parties.
As for the game, how about trying to be less intimidating? A big guy like you doesn't need a whole army, just a couple of buddies. Then you won't have any problems with having bad guys running in the other direction. Them Swedes will come right at you.
You'll also get a lot more experience and loot for you troubles.
