So far smaller things like this can be edited:
Chat emojis (we need a Steam emoji mod with stuff like
Ability icons for skills
Player, guard, monster names and titles
Starting price, starting skills, starting techs, starting loan and loans
Quest name generation
There’s also a file containing streamer names, in which I added a bunch of youtubers and the like for fun (The Spiffing Brit being one of them, obviously) but the game still insisted on the first streamer joining being "Kitten Purple" so I'm not sure that file works properly/is even used by the game or maybe I didn't do it correctly/forgot to save or something.
If anyone can figure out how to edit VMB files I assume we’ll be able to edit weapon designs, creature building blocks and such too.
Yes, the Creative Update is talked about on the discord fairly frequently. Trevors' recently decided that it might be better to update smaller things sooner so that bugfixes and the like can come through faster, thus the Creativity Spikes which add smaller (but still relevant) additions while he continues building up to the Creativity Update itself, though it's main factor is getting out hotfixes and smaller additions.
