shark for starting one. on the flipside, you may get too dependent on Enemy Sense

What about as far as late game goes? Which would you say is the best late game?
Depends on your build.

Isonade is not that good actually. Kato is better (KI regen) and even Daiba-washi.
Enko later becomes brutal against small to medium enemies.
There are a couple, it depends on your style and build. The Ninjutsu one is useless if you don't do Ninjutsu OFC.

For LW Kato is probably the best. For just the bonuses it gives Peacock gives a really big attack boost if you use extraction in strong stance. Kara-jishi is a really good general damage boost you just got use a skill and it gives you like +40% damage for a time.

Tenjen Kugaku and Suzaku.

i personally think ALL guardians are good, i tend to switch out alot of them cuz they help out depending where i go and who i fight. so far it's been helping.

Isonade is a great one to start out with - enemy sense will warn you of ambushes, and healing on kills will help save elixirs.

Kato is probably the best straight-up general combat one. Damage, extra ki, ki regen - won't ever be useless.

Kara-jishi for damage boost. Hit one skill and get a huge attack buff for quite a while.

Saoirse is great when you are heading into the unknown with a ton of amrita on you and you ain't sure of your survival.

Suzaku has one specific use - oneshot prevention.

For endgame you would want maximum farming boost, and that is achieved with Daiba-washi and Itokuri.

really depends what build you play

I switched spirits a lot and still keep my spirit stat at 34 to be flexible. I like Saoirse, even though I didn't even get use out of the last trait. Just amrita+enemy sense is ok, but she also changes the secondary spirits' effects a bit, usually strengthening the existing stat.
Favourite overall is Itokuri for drop increases and sometimes paralysis.
That said, I was never focused on damage, my choices would probably be very different then.

Tengen. ALthough I have not tested them all.

Kato's biggest bonuses are close combat damage, +skill damage and Tenacity A. He is the best guardian for straight up melee damage for someone who is not min/maxing on their gear.

The thing is you can pretty much cap Close combat damage from armor alone by mixing three grace sets. That will put CCD at over 30%. Meaning the +close combat damage from Kato gets a reduced bonus.

You can get +skill damage on your weapon which is another 22% which is approaching the 30% soft cap.

That leaves Tengen at dealing more damage with extraction. Plus also Tengen has Tenacity B- which is good enough. And he has 15% damage absorbtion to Yokai. WHich is a the equivalent of wearing two or three additional heavy armor pieces when fighting Yokai.. Also Tengen can change elementals on the fly meaning you can counter which ever enemy you're facing by just pressing Triangle + Circle until you get the elemental status you want whilst using LW.

The Raiken is a very strong LW damage alternative for Kato, especially in NG where Warrior of the West is such a widely used set. It won't give you quite as much damage as Kato, but it'll slow down your enemies. Get some onmyo for lightning talisman and sloth talisman. Pick items with bonuses to living weapon and lightning. Applying the Electrified condition will slow down your enemy (stacks with Sloth) and will trigger damage and defense bonuses from WotW. It's a nice combo of slowdown + damage. Raiken has great Tenacity, too.

There are more guardians you get from the dlc stuff. I hear people like nine tails.
