Unless you want to spoil yourself and google those wave rewards.
If you find items fitting your play style, go for it, while keeping the balance of items and renown.
In any case, you can't waste renown on items with the Darkness team, and the Arberrang side isn't as hard.
For example, my main character was Alette and any knockback item is arguably broken with her (the one I had also increased archery range by 2 and gave a - 2 on armor, but that was never a problem. I don't think Alette got hit once in the entire game). I just put her in the middle on overwatch at the start of each turn and pretty much nobody could touch my team, since if the knockback trigger the attack is cancelled and overwatch can trigger on every enemy that moves within range. Then she also got the bloodletter title so everyone that got knocked back also had bleed applied but that was just an extra bonus.
Oddleif (and Nid, but i never used her) also have the rain of arrows ability that also work well with knockback, (but it only trigger one time per turn i think).
Then I had the 2 "hit and run" horsedudes with movement increasing items. So they could hit, and retreat since overwatch doesn't trigger when the enemy is already in front of your characters so if any enemy tried to come up to them, they would just get a knockback arrow from alette...(did i mention that the "home" part of the game was a breeze). And then a Varl or two or the Dredge as meat shields. I never lost a battle with home team and barely had any injuries.
Just remember, the "+ X to talents" items doesn't do anything before your character actually have unlocked talents.
