Start with Oli or Petrus, (depends if you prefer reinforcments or ranged). Get them the other ability so they have both bloody flail and axe storm. Then focus on giving them high crit chance and the messenger of death heroic title. Messenger of death increases damage on repeated attacks and can be activated by axe storm and bloody flail, so you'll be pumping out insane amounts of damage.
Ekkill the Forsaken:
Start with Ekkil, or anyone who can unlock Guts, but Ekkil is best as its his default. Get him run through for mobility. Focus on increasing his survivability, (dodge, resilience, ect). Give him either the Forsaken or Fool title, either works. Have him run around on his own, his high survivability will ensure he survives this even on higher difficulties as long as you are smart, though admittedly it is sometimes a bit of a toss up if you get unlucky. Get him to use Guts as much as possible, its a very powerful ability that does high dammage to all adjacent units, and under ideal circumstances can do 20 or 30 damage per turn.
Ubin the Hopeful:
Ubin's stronger together ability is nice, but we can do better. With the hopeful heroic title he can give far more benifits to adjacent units, and because he is a big varl, you can have your entire party adjecent to him and reciving these buffs. Feel free to upgrade his damage potential as he will be more or less safe from harm when surounded by so many teammates.
(this can also apply to Folka but her small size means she cant be adjacent to you entire party at once.)
Always bring a healer (alfrun/apostate) and someone to boost willpower (Juno/Eirik). will is hard to come by in banner saga 3, and healing is super important to avoid hero death.
The Three Core:
Alette, Kyvi and Bastion are the core heroes of my line up, the ones dealing great damage, controlling the battefield and breaking armor.
1-) Alette (Monster Killer) with Solvi's Method. Her STR scales very fast killing enemy with overwatch. In stages with waves she gets easily +50 STR. Solvi's gives her +2 range, which allows her almost complete map control, and to stay far away from danger while being very effective and most importantly it gives her knockback to stun lock enemies.
Solvi's Method for me is the best item on her. The other item I may consider is the Dredge Clapper, because of the Knockback 3,basically Overwatch always stun lock enemies, as the minimum dmg is 3.
Essential Talents: Artery Strike (STR) and Lucky Shot (Exertion), Defy (Will) is also good just in case some enemy gets to her.
2-) Kyvi (The Granite One) with Brass Ocarina or any other item that gives him high Break like Miniature carving. Kyvi function is to tank enemy heroes and fastly shred their armor. Kindle and Drumfire are perfect for that. I basically run him at the enemy and kindle then. With low armor, the knockback from Alette almost always will work at early stage of the fight, while she is still building up her STR. I try to position him in a space that will protect Alette from incoming enemies.
Kindle and Overwatch have great synergy, as the forced movement from the first triggers the other.
Essential Talents: Tighten Straps (ARM), Stubborn (WIL) and Divert (BRK), to keep him tank and full of Wil to buffhis mobility and use skills.
3-) Bastion (The Unmoved) same items and strategy as Kyvi. Bastion and Kyvi also have good synergy with Drumfire to heal each other armor if necessary.
Talents: Same as Kyvi.
The Three Support:
Apostate, Iver and Eyvind are my last three heroes of choice.
4-) Apostate (The Whisper) with any item to grant suvivability like Meadspring Bottle. Basically his function is to cast Umbrage over and over again to boost the STR of Alette and make the Monster Killer + Overwatch + Kindle + Battering Ram deadlier.
Talents: Everyone that buffs survivabilty. I pick first Robust (STR) and Dodge (EXE)
5-) Iver (Last Standing). Items are the same as Kyvi and Bastion, but he has less priority. The Second Skill of choice is FORGE AHEAD . Iver strategy is to position himself to protect Alette, Apostate and Eyvind. In the first round I will use him to either forge ahead Apostate to make the Umbrage buff happens in the first round of battle or I will forge ahead either Kyvi or Bastion for a second usage of Kindle. My choice depends on the position of enemies in the battlefield.
Iver Battering Ram also synergizes well with Alette Overwatch, breaking armor and get the damage done.
Talents: Similar to Kyvi.
6-) Eyvind (Twice-Born or Hopeful) with any item to grant suvivability like Meadspring Bottle. Eyvind is pretty good at early stages to repair the armor of heroes like Kyvi and Bastion, but later, because of Items + Heroic Titles + Talents, he becomes quite useless. Still, I think he is essential for my strategy at early levels. I picked Twice Born with him just in came some bad luck happened and some enemy managed to get to him, but I think that Hopeful is kinda nice, helps to buff Alette and, staying side by side with Alette Overwatch Knockback is the safest place in the whole map =).
Talents: Same as Apostate.
Strategy (just to sum everything up):
So basically the strategy is to give Alette all the kills to buff her. She is the sole damage dealer so the other heroes just have to support her and survive. I leave every low HP enemy to die at ther hands instead of finishing them off with another hero.
I use Kyvi and Bastion to break enemy armor and force them to move against her Overwatch.
Apostate and Eyvind are there to buff STR and Armor.
Iver is kinda a wild card, if I can say that. He can use battering ram to help break enemy armor and trigger overwatch, most often than not I use him to forge ahead Apostate or Kyvi/Bastion, as Kindle is battering ram on steroids haha. Iver is also big and good to block enemies path against Alette.
