GOG Version: Can you revert updates?
Ok, I’m desperate. The current update borked my 30 hours play through I was in middle off. I backed up my saves. Here’s my question:

Anyone playing on GOG? If I just buy the game there again can I go back a version with offline installers and continue with my Steam saves?

Why dont you download and install game version before that patch 1.2?

You should be able to downpatch manually using Steam's console command:
download_depot 482400 482401 7384543086023885428
and overriding the current files

They are asking about the GOG.com version.

I tried this last name and got an error to the effect of “don’t have permission to access file”

Maybe I did it wrong, will try again after work. And also: I bought the game on GOG too but they’ve already replaced the original installers with 1.2. So it doesn’t work. I wasted another $20. This is the only game I’ve had time to play in over a year. Ugly divorce from an abuser… this game was my respite. I won’t start over. Hopefully something is possible

Soo, I must’ve typed wrong. Your package info worked and it’s DLed. I’ve never done this through the console before so hopefully it works. I imagine I have to manually find and delete the game files but keep System Shock installed in my steam library? Got some work today tonight..

Yeah, after it's done downloading console tells you here the files are. You go to System Shock's normal installation folder, move the files somewhere lese, copy files downloaded via Steam console and run it normally. Until the next patch or files verification (due to Steam crashing or something), Steam shouldn't override them.

Yes, the gog version actually has a drop down tab you can revert your game to a previous version. Steam should be taking notes as using the steam cmd prompt for it's depot commands is archaic and riddled with esoteric addresses that require a lot of digging into steam's database along with youtube demonstrations.

Check this though:
I bought the GOG version on top of this hoping to do just that, revert versions. Nightdive in their infinite wisdom has already updated the bare game installers to 1.2. So all that are available are 1.2 and two old patches that only work if you still have an old version physically installed somewhere. I’ve already asked for a refund. It was a stupid Hail Mary on my part. Wasted another $20 on a game I can’t finish. Hopefully this steam db thing works. My life is so busy I’ve played SS 30 hours… over the last 6 months

Halleluyah! It works! Kudos, mate!!!!

I hate this so much! I'm stuck in a room on a flight deck because I can't open a door anymore. Another save is much earlier and it is also ruined. Maybe I will also ask for a refund.

Try the revert instructions posted here. My guess is that old saves should be fine, just delete any new ones. I haven’t had a chance to yet, have work until 11pm but I’m staying up late to try later. Key progression items (the computer chips) disappeared from my cargo lift. So I’m likely perma locked if the regression process doesn’t take. Even if I wanted to try defeating all the glitches enemies again with limited resources. NightDive suggesting “just start over” is insane. That means they’ve treated their retail release as early access… but not told it’s customers. I was loving the remake FWIW, just not enough to manually recycle the same 1,000 pieces of junk again and solve the same randomized puzzles again, 30 hours worth of it. Pretty bummed they pushed this out without warning us before the auto install

Sorry my advice seemed off. I just really want steam to make the DB more accessible. I really don't want to have to google a lot of ♥♥♥♥ just to revert a game to an older version just sitting in it's own database because Valve isn't giving a ♥♥♥♥ about making life easier.

No worries. It’s solid advice, why I bought this game twice. How much I was enjoying it. And agree: there should ALWAYS be a simple way to revert versions for offline play. It’s crazy that files are changed on our computers and there’s nothing we can do about it. One day our paid product works, the next it doesn’t and the developers only advice is “start over”

Sui Machine: you’re a hero! This worked. I must’ve typed the package names wrong in console, I’ve never done it before and was going off a Baldurs Gate guide trying to find the relevant IDs. I’m am beyond thrilled. Now I can finish the game and update after for both experiences. Gratitude friend!
