No autosave?
I get that they were trying to remake the original 1996 experience for 2023, but I doubt whether having to save manually every thirty seconds is something most people are dying to re-experience. Especially given that saves in this remake are virtually instantaneous--no spinning icons to wait on--there really should be an autosave option.

F5 is quicksave, you just have to remember to do it.

There is an autosave, it's just not every 5 minutes or every time you get through a hard area. Welcome to the world of manual saves.

In fact, it might just be once or twice a level.

I do recall the game giving me notice about an autosave after awakening from the coma in medbay. So there's certainly somekind of autosave feature implemented.

Yeah, I know about F5. I just don't think requiring it is a legitimate part of a game's experience. There should be autosave as an option (since some may not want it), which can be augmented by the player with F5 or a "hard" save if there's a particular spot where he wants to use it.

I've got to go back and play the last half of floor one again because I'm so used to autosave having my back in other games I forgot to do it manually. It's not like I'm new to this--I was in my thirties when the original SS came out--but just like the young guys I've gotten used to modern conveniences.

Ha ha ha ha in your face, GenZ gamers!
F5/F8 quicksaves/quickloads are the only way to go!
EVERY game should be like that!
SCREW YOU with your stupid autosave feature, it's for babies!

yikes

It is the way games were back in the day, it added to the difficulty. If you forget to save you had to do it alllll over again. Games have been hand holding people with the newer games. :shodan:

I disagree, being able to manually save either takes away from the difficulty or lets games get away with unbalanced gameplay and difficulty spikes. That's exactly why I tend to stick to soulslikes and roguelikes nowadays. Anyways, I will buy the game regardless, I guess, because I love the original. It was the first game I upgraded my rig for (extending RAM to 8MB allowed for higher resolution textures :) ).

Honestly, fun game, but I'm uninstalling due to this. To each his own. I don't want to replay the last 30 minutes.

Yeah, I grew up with games that let you quicksave and I developed the nasty habit of hitting F5 every ten seconds. This basically means that you play with invincibility on because if you die, you just revert several seconds back. And as you say, it was soulsborne games and rogue likes that showed me how much more engaging a game gets when you take this away from the player (the stakes are higher because you actually have something to lose, your achievements feel much more real and earned etc). This is why I really enjoyed Prey: Mooncrash. Not saying that the game was perfect (trying to explore with the corruption mechanic was quite stressing, for example, and I get why some people didn't like that aspect), but it showed that this kind of high stakes gameplay without save-scumming is viable in an immersive sim, which is a genre that is traditionally very "save-scummy".

Technically it's not required, since you get free respawns via the GOOD/EVIL CYBORG chamber... You do need to find it first for each level, though.
