Or use any easy-to-find storage boxes to store excess items and just mark them on your map with a custom marker.
I also found when I played system shock 2, I'd get the same problem you did in this game if I actually stored things in the elevator unlike most players, but dumping them outside the doors was fine.
The thing that annoys me is that it worked perfectly fine for long enough that it didn't feel unreasonable to assume this was an intentional design feature.
Items on the ground are safe too. Just not in elevators. Or doorways.
