Is multiplayer still active?

A while back when I picked this game up on my 360, I enjoyed the heck out of the multiplayer, 8-man FFA hunter-and-hunted thing. Eventually my 360 died and i didn't buy a new one.

Now I have Black Flag on Steam. I tried multiplayer, and I don't much care for it. Quickmatch always puts me in an "artifact" or "3-point-hold" game, which I don't enjoy much.

So my question is, is this game's multiplayer still active?
Is 8-man FFA still popular?
Is it pay-to-play (x-box live style subscriptions) or can I play free on steam, if I own the game?
And finally, if you happen to have played any other AC games' multiplayer mode, i have the same question about those.

Please don't post with "don't buy for multiplayer" I really enjoyed the multiplayer, it's worth it for me.

It isn't active. My best advice would be to purchase the game and either wait for a community event or find people to play with. Also, you can play for free on Steam. I assume from that question you are new to PC. Multiplayer on PC is always free, as long as you have internet.

Multiplayer is dead. It's not even advertised on the store page. It shows single player only.
Don't know about discord channel, didn't try.
But tried for a couple days already at random hours to join a multiplayer match, and max players count was 3, after waiting for half an hour, and the match never started.
So as long as you don't have friends to play it - don't count on joining a random match. It won't happen.

of course, MMOs with subscription models are the exception to that rule. not like there's a lot of those in the grand scheme of things, anyway.
