Whispers in Story Mode!

I have played AC, ACII, ACIII, and ACIV and am very familiar with the multiplayer and the whispering in there...
Just recently I picked up Brotherhood and started going through the story and immediately noticed random whispering just like in the multiplayer. I figured it had to do with my enemies, or possibly something to do with Altair's ghost, but now I am on a mission asking me to buy a dagger and pauldrons from a blacksmith and the whispering is intense!

What am I missing here!? Am I going nuts!? lol.
