In Brotherhood, the VERY BIG map for the city of Roma is downright beautiful in the Renaissance theme, there's lots of cool secret templar treasures to loot, you can get a free DLC if you earn enough uplay points by completing achievements ingame, and it pretty much kept all the good things in the famous ACII but improved on it. And you'll see why everyone loves Ezio (but I'd suggest getting AC2 first because yeah the combat in that game sucks, but it'll suck even more if you play the newer ones first and you'll get better backstory)
In ACIII, you get 3 huge maps which are Boston, New York, and the fronteir, and you get a 4th map for your homestead (which you can transform from an undeveloped plot of land into a productive little village of itself through very interesting side story quests). The Native American theme in this game is unique and the 18th century theme comes with all the icons you can expect from colonial America: redcoats, tricorns, muskets, warships, Revolutionary War (not civil war), you name it, you'll see it. Connor has been criminally underrated and scoffed by Ezio fanboys because they can't find value in his sober dedication to fighting for the safety of his people amidst the chaos in his time. Also, the combat is as fluid and addicting as ever.
Both games story are tied together through the conflict of assassins vs templars, despite the different time periods; Brotherhood IS a direct continuation from AC2 (infact, its BASED on what you do in ACII), I have no idea what went on in your friend's mind.
Since you're feeling "iffy" on AC2 because of the combat, I'd just recommend getting it first, then Brotherhood, then III.
But DON'T buy any assassin's creed (or any other uplay managed game) off of steam. You'll be dealing with a nightmare of issues regarding Steam having to launch Uplay, save files get lost that way, and it tanks your computer's performance having to be forced to run steam and uplay at the SAME TIME. It'll be on sale on Uplay soon, probably around this Christmas.
running errands for the whole game.
While Ezio was basically just a rich young man who had a way with the ladies; originally a troublemaker who became a man of the people, Connor can be described as a young man who is righteous in every sense of the word and humble at the same time; at times naive, but nevertheless very passionate and is also a man of the people. He might not get everything he wants, but this helps him seems more relatable than Ezio.
Not only that, but when you factor in how Connor believes in the creed as Ezio does not (or at least Connor is better at the creed than Ezio), it is hard to push him aside (that is unless you the player don't care much for the creed)
Characters aside, with each AC game making the open world more and more alive, I've gotta say that AC3's world is the liveliest, filled with things to do aside from the story, such as building the homestead and playing around with the econonmy.
If you're choosing between just one or the other go for Brotherhood. After that (assuming you like what you play) skip 3 and go straight for 4, or alternatively play 2 since it's still a fantastic game.
You're getting a very accurate picture of the player base right now actually, which is good. As you can tell the majority of people really dislike AC3.
Setting aside an objective view of the facts however, my personal preference of the main series from best to worst is thus:
Black Flag, AC2, Revelations, Brotherhood, AC1, AC3
Just because you like the game doesn't mean everyone else does and believe it or not, it's actually okay for popular opinion to differ from yours.
Check Steam reviews, more negative than any other AC title. Speak to gamers into the series, generally rated as the worst even when considering the first game's repetitiveness. Look at this thread; you're the only one saying how great it is. Search this very forum for more results on problems, issues, annoyances, griefs and negative reactions than again any other AC title.
Saying this game was well received is like saying Call of Duty: Ghosts was well received.
Metacritic user reviews rate it an average 6.1
The only lower Assassin's Creed game was Liberation, a spin-off of AC3 at 5.7
Devs openly discussed problems with the game after fan backlash on release.
Countless forum topics across multiple gaming websites discuss "What went wrong" with AC3.

Were you not around when the game came out or something? Feel free to open Google if you still don't believe me.
And I really don't think insults help your case when you're meant to be providing a factual and objective counter-argument.

To the OP, check out Angry Joe's review on the game. It's a fair and critical evaluation of AC3.

To the inevitable response from Rawfire saying I'm just posting a review to support my side of the argument. He gives the game a positive score, which does not align with my personal opinion.
I prefer the constructive opinions and the ones that make sense...the backlash opions against AC3 were mainly Ezio fanboy-ism and disliking the new native american setting
Skip III and IV. They both kinda ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up AC for me. Play AC:II, Brotherhood AC:R, and if you feel like it you can play the first one.
