Okay, from someone who played those back then I still replay AC II from time to time... I still adore the game because it was one of the longest ones that I've played with compelling storyline, characters, universe and suiting mechanics to those days that still today don't sound too bad (especially if compared with my current AC: Unity play in which sometimes I completely lose control over Arnor's parkour because it simply doesn't follow my commands to the letter).
So, all in all, and imho ofc the AC II game is amongst the gems of this franchise and if you can relate to that and surpass/addapt to the game's camera settings then I'm dead sure that you'll enjoy the game far better than your current feelings about it are.
Lmfao yes you're right, I am/was reaching. The functionality got much better after continuing with the story & unlocking some gear that made the climbing a bit faster. This somewhat remedied the above mentioned issue. It's weird though because the previous two Assassin's Creed before it had decent camera function during parkour, aside from the unpolished zoom-ins while navigating tight spaces.
It was a better experience after unlocking that gear and I had no problem finishing the game. I also finished Revelations & currently working on ACIII at the moment. Hoping Mirage will bring back some of the older AC feeling...
(And even despite AC:Rogue being a decent game and having way more polished mechanics than its predecessor AC IV: Black Flag the story didn't felt as compelling as in previous titles nor the lenght of the usual game play for these sort of games. And, also imao, they've started losing their good developers name and policies right after going for quickmoney grabbing schemes with those Helix Credits from inside their games pretty much ever since AC: Unity came out and on most occasions started not developing their in-game's stories so well as they did in previous titles.)
