Most AAA FPS games are about 12-20 hours some push 15-30 hours depending on side quests etc. This game prey is pushing 30-40 hours for the main objective alone and possibly 60+ for side objectives. Thats a long ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ game and goes against the average length of Immersive sims for the most part and single player fps games. It is most definitely my thing and my style of game but Prey overstays its welcome. I would much prefer a solid 20 hour game with lots of re-playability ( which Prey does have ) then something that turns into a 40 hours + slog.
I read an article written online by some website explaining why Prey kind of went under the radar of most people and why it never received a lot of praise and was simply forgotten. Explains how the game is almost too perfect in every aspect to a fault. There is no jankyness or glitches or memorable quirks or charms. It almost makes the game rather lifeless. There was simply not much for fellow Prey players to discuss about the game itself.
By rights I should like this game lots but maybe its the branching quests that work more like an RPG or MMO type style of play. 1 main objective leads to 5 other branches, each one of those branch missions leads to 1-5 other branches of missions. Its just overwhelming and unnecessary and gives me a headache. Also its hard to wrap your head around the level design ( even tho each section is solid) the ship itself is confusing since not a single adjacent area is accessible other than going outside the ship or finding some other way.
I did well exploring and know of the verticality of this game just like dishonored, know how to exploit the glue gun etc. Have plenty of resources and a good build but after 20 hours or so when you think it should be done its nowhere even close to the end. Which for this type of game doesnt work very well.
Me too sandwichfren, me too.
It does start to get somewhat cluttered.
Honestly the game starts super interesting but the more it tries to expand on filler and unecessary narrative, it just starts insulting your usage of time, it really starts to feel you're not playing a fun game, just really wasting time instead, the worldbuilding starts to fall apart the more times you go through the same places again and again for 20 times and beyond.
Give it some time and it might grow on you. Play the game on it's terms for the gameplay. Forget the story if you feel that way. I don't know if this makes sense but I sometimes feel just like you described but then I forget the story/narrative and I just play for sake of the gameplay.
Eh, case is already lost to me, even more so i really like the design of the Mimics and how they work in gameplay, but all other enemies are just your typical RPG variants that i absolutely got tired of fighting endlessly every time i revisit a section of the station because this game also have this soulslike element of repopulating the levels on every visit.
If Turrets was supposed to help to keep that in check then they are an absolute joke because looks like even Mimics can chomp their health in like 3 slaps, they can't effectively kill anything if more than a single Mimic appears in their sight.
Just FYI, i don't like using the Typhon abilities and i also don't like using Stealth, this game gave me a false propaganda that it would be just Arkane's own Dead Space but in FPS, instead i was greeted with a buncha things that did not even remotely related to that besides the presentation.
It's actually not "fps" per say. If you try to play it like a typical fps game you are going to have a bad time - although with certain upgrades and abilities Prey can be played like typical fps but it's not very rewarding.
