Prey = System Shock 3
I'm here to let this company know that I’m not cool with your BS f..kthesda: You basically make a system shock clone and then you have nerve to bully small indie devs for using word prey in their title. Company that thinks gamers and its fans are so stupid that they cannot distinguish titles ‘Prey’ from ‘Prey for the Gods’ doesn’t deserve fans – don’t worry, I'm not yours anymore! You don’t give Review copies so people have to wait for review and hope those are not rushed – I rather wait until your game is on deep sale -oh better yet I wait for System Shock 3.

♥♥♥♥erythesda even admits that this is spiritual successor for System Shock 2 when System Shock 3 is being made by Otherside Entertainment! Is this a new way big companies are srewing smaller ones? Am I the only one who finds what this company is doing and has done (as a whole) disgusting? If you people want system shock would you rather buy it from the company who has rights to the title and by doing so you support smaller developer?

What prevents from big companies taking any cool idea from small developers, put it to their game and rush it to the marked before indies can? Is this the future of gaming? I cannot wait all the comments when System Shock 3 has been released; ooh this is a Prey clone!...

You realize its not even Bethesda's say right? They are a child company of Zenimax. Which means they literally cant do anything unless told to do so or told they can. But you are now banking on SS3 to be good and not a total ♥♥♥♥ fest when it is in the hands of EA.... a WELL known gaming industry villian company that doesnt give a ♥♥♥♥ about fans, game play or anything. They are just in it for money and literally doesn't bully companies... they take hostile control over them then force them to very strict timelines and to make everything the way they want to.

They destroyed Westwood (Command & Conquer), they destroyed Maxis (Sim games), they destroyed Bioware now, and have a lot of other gmaes where they took over the companies and then destroyed the series...

And you want to ♥♥♥♥♥ to Bethesda about this game? You CLEARLY have no grasp on what is going on in the industry to be hating on Bethesda for Prey.

Sigh

FIrst they didn't bully a third party developer, they filed a trademark claim (as they have to do in regards to US trademark law or they risk the chance of being unable to enforce trademarks in the future)

Second they sent out early copies of Prey, just not to professional reviewers (as they as a company decided to stop that practice) There choice really.

They never said this game is a spiritual succsor to system shock (which falls on the titles Bioshock and Dead Space) they instead it was a game inspired by system shock or a system shock like game.

These cool ideas you claim have become tropes of the genre for years and years and years and has affected all sorts of games from Doom, to Call of Duty, Fear, Bioshock, Deadspace, Alien Vs Predator, and yes even dishonored (which though has more in line with say thief than system shock, both of which are looking glass titles)

Regardless though, this topic has been brought up multiple times in this forum. So use the search feature in the future.

SS3 is being published by Starbreeze studios. EA lost the rights to SS.

Phew. EA would have ruined it, they only make trash now.

Starbreeze have actually made some quite good games.

STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN (March 14, 2017) Starbreeze AB, an independent creator, publisher and distributor of high quality entertainment products, has signed a publishing agreement with Otherside Entertainment regarding the game System Shock 3. Starbreeze will invest $12 million to bring the game to PC and other platforms.

System Shock 3 – The latest in the series of landmark, award-winning games from Otherside Entertainment is in development under the direction of industry legend Warren Spector and a dream team behind such ground breaking games including the original System Shock & System Shock 2, as well as Thief: The Dark Project and Deus Ex.

“System Shock is one of those iconic franchises in the history of games that still gets my blood going and Mr. Spector is one of the founding fathers of the modern action RPG” said Bo Andersson-Klint, Starbreeze CEO. “We’re greatly looking forward to bringing System Shock 3 to players world wide in our collaboration with Otherside Entertainment and Warren Spector’s team. I’ll be first in line to play”.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Starbreeze for System Shock 3,” said OtherSide’s CEO Paul Neurath. They truly get games and gamers, and have been able to translate that understanding into a robust publishing business, and build thriving gaming communities around their franchises.”

Starbreeze will be able to recoup 120% of its full investment including marketing costs. Starbreeze share of revenues will become 50% after the investment is recouped. Otherside Entertainement will retain 100% of the intellectual property relating to System Shock 3.

System Shock 3 is currently in the early concept stages of development. Fans can go to the game site to receive updates as they become available.

It should be noted that Otherside Entertainment is basically Looking Glass Studios.

But ultimatly EA lost the rights to System Shock and they are now owned by Night Dive Studios.

Night Dive Studios are the guys who made System Shock Enhanced Edition for moder platforms, and they are also currently working on a kickstarted project of System Shock Reboot/Remaster.

Really, are you serious? When I criticize Bethesda/Zenimax doesn't mean I like EA. Did you read my whole comment and if so you clearly didn't understand it. I said their actions as a whole, not just for Prey. I'm here complaining because I don't want Bethesda to become Next EA, Ubisoft etc. Can you really say that Zenimax/Bethesda hasn't been taking steps towards EA? I sure do and that's why I'm here too complaining that I don't support their actions. But you are right, I should have mentioned Zenimax instead of just Bethesda, I'll give you that. One reason why it skipped my mind is; as someone who has quit his job more than once when I was asked to do something that goes against my values or I realized that I’m part of something that conflicts with those. I don't see Bethesda as totally innocent either.

Instead of just complaining, I’m willing to put my words to actions by voting with my wallet and let companies know why. I certainly will not defend companies for their ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nor people who do what is being told no matter how badly it stinks.

Here is ling to article where small indie devs change their game title from Prey for the Gods to Praye to the Gods to avoid fight with Bethesda.

In my opinion this whole trademark nonsense has gone too far. Do you really defend a company who says that there cannot be word ‘prey’ in the game title? If so from my point of view you are part of the problem. Why I’m not surprised that there will be several Zenimax/Bethesda defender fanboys. Many of u pre-order video games from them too, right? I hope I’m wrong.

This sounds totaly lunatic to me. Prey reminds me of System Shock a lot. But in a good way. It has System Shock vibe with new story, enemies and cool game mechanics (mimics). Great game and great gameplay. Im happy that there are still companies producing such a complex games. And still -heres someone ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about stealing System Shock 3. What about Dishonered and new Deus Ex - also stealers, because gameplay is similar? Wake Up.

To be clear Zenimax is Bethesda. Zenimax is a company created by Bethesda for tax and shareholder purposes, and while they own Bethesda on paper both of them are Bethesda.

Bethesda stopped sending out review copies of there games to professional reviewers, which incidently is there choice. Honestly game jouralists arn't what they used to be, and quite frankly I don't blame them for making that decision. Instead Beth sends out review copies to youtubers instead.

Trademark law requires companies to activly protect there trademarks (even if it seems stupid) as any case of them not doing it can undermine them in court when actually trying to enforce it for real. All big companies (and small companies who own trademarks) do this. In most cases its settled entirely out of court and its the "attempt" that matters. Note in both trademark cases in recent Beth history (scrolls for Mojang, and Prey of the Gods) either the name wasn't changed or it was simply spelled differntly. EA, Ubisoft, Valve, and even CD project Red does this. It only blew up in Beth's face in these two situations because both of the developers went to twitter before going to there laywers and finding out it was a perfectly normal situation.

Once again you fail to take my comment as a whole. I would not have a problem with Prey being spiritual successor for System Shock 2 so much if they would allow other use work Prey in their title. Even when some of u disagree with me on this part, does it mean to you everything else is wrong or insane too?
Here is link to an article why Prey is not sequel to their previuos Prey.

Yes because they needed a new title for the IP and Arkane said they would only do it if they were allowed to completely rewrite the game world because they wanted to make a System Shock like game. And Beth agreed to it. None of which has any bearing on your orginal post.
naur May 14, 2017 @ 7:23am
One reason I’m worried about Prey being System shock 3 is: when we have big companies which operate at principle ‘competition is a sin’ I’m worried that bigger companies can “take” what ever project from smaller ones and push it to marked before they can. Where is the line between taking inspiration and copying? I also wanted to point out my worry that in a world where companies defend their ip’s, ideas, trade marks aggressively in my opinion it has gone too far. I get it that taking inspiration from other game/game series is not a bad thing and at first protecting trade mark seems separate from this, for me it isn’t. There is a possibility that we will live in a world where big companies have taken over and there is no more smaller ones, no more competition. I shouldn't have assumed you people realize this.

You took just part of what I said and use it to discredit it all. Granted I shouldn't have posted in such a rush where I cannot bring my point about this one issue more clearly. It is large issue and and I think I've only touched it.
naur May 14, 2017 @ 7:40am
My point about this one issue can be simply put like this: If you take ideas from others don’t take your trade mark protection this far that others cannot even use one word because it is in your title. For me this is so close to: you made a game which is too close like ours, took too many ideas – how dare you! Can you get the main idea, the spirit of this? "Wisdom is not in the words, it is in the contexts"

Thanks for your replies. I hope I made myself clear, finally :o

Prey is similar to SS but do you feel like the market is so oversaturated with hard sci-fi immersive sims that there's no room for... two?

Are you cray cray? Be thankful.
Are you offended by VALVE literally stealing original PREY's portals (down to the orange rims) and making two high-grossing games out of it?

BESIDES this is undoubtedly a successor to the original PREY.

- Main protagonist is non-white
- Fighting aliens with supernatural powers
- Looking Glass techonology is the same as portals in PREY
- Spacewalks and zero gravity games

Future? Dude this has been happening throughout the industry since the industry started. It's nothing new.
