Personally how I play depends on my mood at the time - I have save games where my sims have started poor I and have stuck to the rules of the game, and other games on different maps with other sim families that i made instantly rich. To each their own.
Why would you want to play the game the right way?
Because it protects you from loosing intrest in the game and not playing it through like you would any other game...
You should only use cheats once you have accomplished every single goal in the game and the only way for you to do anything new is ..... with cheats. But then, there is so much DLC that you can just add more content and keep playing.
Trust me.... if you play The Sims 3, the right way, you will find yourself putting more time into playing and less time into being bored and switching to a different game.
CHEATS = BORING and WRONG WAY TO PLAY
As I already said, I play some games using cheats and some without, its fun for me either way.
My main game however, is my business. ;)
And for the record, I'm an avid Sims 3 "cheater" and I've logged 200+ hours that I have yet to get bored of. It just works for me. (Not sure whether to be proud or ashamed, lmao.)
However if you really want to play without using any cheats and have not already done so you should check out the Sims 3 Legacy challenge[forum.thesims3.com]. That seems like it would be your sort of thing and you will probably find more like minded people to make friends with taking part in that style of gameplay.

For some reason I enjoyed that one more than the legacy challenge. Might be because the legacy one loses interest for me after the founder dies off.
( O.o I went looking around more and found a list of a boatload of challenges. Goodbye spare time! http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/362585.page )
