Why is my mailbox sparkling?
Loaded up The Sims 3 last night and my mailbox had glowing firefly-looking things all around it. But I had no special interactions available with the mailbox. What's the deal? Anyone know?

You have a gift awaiting acceptance.

It's part of a new Sims 3 feature, "player gifting" (requires log-in). Friends can send things to one another. Go to your player wall, in the options menu. After you accept the gift, the sparking should stop.

If you do not log in, you should not experience this feature.

Interesting. Afaik I don't have any "friends" in my Sims 3 profile, unless EA sent me something themselves as part of some promo...

Correct. Your first gift will always be from the game's dev team.
