Switching active households
I want to switch active households temporarily to force a Sim to do something. Barring obvious automatic actions of my current household (go to work/school/don't starve themselves, etc.), will I lose anything (items, money) by switching active households, then going back to the original household?

You will lose all current promises and wishes for that family. The family will also become inactive, meaning they are now subject to the Story Progression system, the system which "makes Sims live". Actions such as moving, job progress / career change, marriage, divorce, pregnancy and such will be autonomous.

If you do not want this to occur, turn off Story Progression before changing your active family. I believe it's in Options > Gameplay.

Hmm... Well, the whole point of this would be to fulfill a wish, so I guess I won't be switching after all. Thanks!

If you're interested, Twallan's "MasterController" mod has a function to retain dreams and opportunities when switching active households.

If you turn off story progression you should have no issues.

Of course, you may want to save your active household and it's lot to the library just to be safe.
