(but of course this is a matter of individual taste ... I for my part definitely agree with Seasons and University ... not so much with generations and supernatural ... and would rather mention Ambitions on third place)
Late Night adds Stardom (together with Paparazzis that may haunt you if you are a celebrity), Bars/Clubs and Penthouse-Appartments ... as well as a new neigborhood that includes the new building types ... so, it surely is worth its money
I agree ... unfortunately there is no single Sims 3 EP that comes close to Sims 2 Appartments ...
although people have been known to cobble self made Appartments together with AFAIK the dorm sharing functionality of Sims 3 University + the callboxes of Sims 3 Latenight
Actually it is pretty easy to avoid celebrity status ... you can opt your own household out of the celebrity sytem via checking a simple checkbox in the optione menu ;)
Also I cannot agree with every time there being a scandal ... my last Sim who was a 3 star celebrity (before my current family) had a lesbian relationship with a fairy ... their first woohoo (in the university world) led to a scandal ... further woohoos (when they were married and had returned to their neighborhood) didn´t cause any further scandals ... despite the fact that Woohoos were a pretty common pastime for them.
Maybe it has to do with Paparazzis or other people being able to see them during their Woohoo ... for which the Late Night expansion has a nice countermeasure ... a huge gate to your estate that keeps out Paparazzis and other Vermin, unless you invite them in ;) )
Is this the case with EA story progression?
(I always use Twallans Story Progression [much better in many regards] and never encountered a spread of vampisism in Bridgeport or other neighborhoods)
Interesting, never knew about this ... which on the other hand is no surprise ... I never tried to put LN bars into another neighborhood (actually Bridgeport has been the standard neighborhood for the last few families I made ... there is no other (official) world that would, without complete redo, in a similar way reflect the feeling of a large city center as Bridgeport does)
True ... they are also available in the Sims 3 Store en masse :D
Yup. It’s what I’ve been doing. The problem occurs when I have one sim that I want to live the celebrity life, and another who’s a loner and doesn’t want the attention. If they are friends (or worse, lovers) they will both be celebrities.
I know. I couldn’t believe it. It happened every. single. time. And I couldn’t build a fence around my property because I lived off of the cliff in Sunset Valley. I wish EA had it so, if the sim kept doing the same scandalous behavior, the public would desensitize. They were harassed well into their senior years.
It used to be. It’s been so long since I’ve allowed vampires to spawn that I don’t know anymore. It was terrible. There was a good stretch of time where every party my sim attended a vampire died of thirst. It was both hilarious and sad.
I’ve never used Twallans Story Progression… I’m assuming it’s good then?
Whoa, really? It’s standard procedure for me for every new town. I have a set of blank saves where all I’ve done is replace the bars in town with the ones from LN. It takes forever, especially when 50% of the time I get the glitch where the bar is unusable and causes the sims to reset (which I never know about until after I finish redoing all the bars. grrr). It’s a must for Starlight Shores, which is my favorite town :)
Yep, it is extremly good ... EAs story progression just is a statistical SP ... that is, it just uses population statistics to deduce who gets promoted, married and so on.
Twallans SP however more or less plays every family out (to a certain degree) ... this way it really creates a plausible story around every Sim and foregoes a few of the problems that EAs SP has (like the neighborhood after some time dying out).
The only drawback for Twallans SP (in comparison to EAs SP) is, that it uses up more system resources, meaning that Sims 3 might run slower on older systems.
The only worlds were I still use the normal EA story progression are the university and World Adventure neighborhoods (Twallans SP always asks you the first time when you load a new neighborhood whether you want to use Twallans SP or not)
There is only one Mod that (according to what I read) puts even more detail into the individual story progresion (by playing each and every action of every Sim in the whole neighborhood out ... and that is "Awesome Story Progression" ... I never tried it however ... AFAIK it is supposed to put an even greater burden on your system (when running Sims 3) than Twallans SP

Isn´t all too strange ... I usually have enough work with placing one specimen of every type of special buildings from the EPs into the town ... due to the fact that I have all EPs and therefore there are so many types of special buildings, I am usually glad when I am able to place at least the most important of them into a new neighborhood without having to replace any already existing buildings by them (or having no free building lots remaining because thre are buildings everyhwere) ... considering the scarcity of available community lots in most of the neigborhoods that uaually leave me with no place for LN bars :D
Starlight Shores is actually where I am currently playing in, with my newest Sim ... but I didn´t do any work with it, as it is supposed to be just a temporary home for my Sim ... after completing his study and marrying his girlfriend he will move to Isla Paradiso ... therefore I saw no need to make the Starlight shores neighborhood especially fancy
I suppose if you have the others you might as well get them all. But still, if you've only got so much money you can spend I'd recommend a different ep.
This definately clears up your initial comment though.
I think it's also worth noting which expansions work well together and which ones don't. IMO Late Night and Showtime complement each other, whereas Late Night (particularily it's town) doesn't work well with Pets.
What makes it not work well coz i have pets
As for play style, Late Night is best when you're playing sims that can go out and do stuff for long hours at a time (bartend, party out, play for tips, fun little time-sinks like that). Unless you want two pets so they can socialize with each other, lonliness can be a problem.
Then again, if you have Pets and want to try playing someting different, this is an option. If you really really like owning pets in every family you play, you might be better off with an expansion that adds to what you already like.
