CAN'T FIND CD KEY FOR THE SIMS 3 GAME

Try this first:

Can't find CD keys for the game. How to find them, per this March, 2021 thread.

I have exactly the same question and found it and it works perfectly! just follow the steps carefully and make sure you installed the base game and dlcs before you go.

I tried this and got 'value not set' as the result

Okay, then, here is the older stuff in my files:

Select the game from the library.

Under the image on the right at the top of the window, click on the jog wheel, manage and CD key.
A window will appear with the keys to the game and all its dlcs.
Correct, however, since it's so easy to find them this way, I had assumed that people asking to find them were not able to access them this way. Lol, maybe I've been wrong all this time. Another way to do it is just to right-click on the game in your library. The same options show up, and you can choose the "Manage" option from there.

You may be able to get your key out of your Windows registry.

Press the Windows key and type: regedit

You will open the Registry Editor program from there. Once that program is open, do not change anything in it - you are only looking for information to copy out of it.

In the left-hand pannel, look under:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    • SOFTWARE
      • WOW6432Node
        • Electronic Arts
          • Sims(Steam)
            • The Sims 3
              • ergc
Should be in the same place for anyone else on a 64-bit version of Windows.

Once you locate that folder in the registry left pane, be sure "ergc" is selected, and on the right side it will say "REG_SZ" under "Type" and the string under "Data" will be your key.

That said, I do not know if EA has messed with this on newer installs because they would totally do something like that. :2017stickycrab:

The above did not work for the original poster, so these suggestions were added later:

Ok, they've made this insanely frustrating.

Try this and see if it gets you anywhere (note that you might need to do this while the game is running):
  • Press the Windows key.
  • Type: system
  • Open that app. (alternative is Control Panel > System).
  • There, click "Advanced System Settings" on the left.
  • On the box that pops up, click the button for "Environment Variables".
  • Look down that list and see if any are named CDKEY.

You might also be able to see it by running the game, then opening a Windows command prompt (press Start, then type CMD and run that app), then typing in: echo %CDKEY%

I'm sorry I can't test these - I have had the game a long time and still have the actual, visible CD Key.

One can always attempt the "old school" method: using one's favorite txt-editor create a short batch (<whatever>.bat) file to either "echo !%CDKEY%!" or "type !%CDKEY%!" (maybe followed by a "pause" line), then execute (run) that file at the correct time ...

If the result is "!!" then you will know that either you aren't executing the batch command at the correct time -or- that whatever should set that environmental variable never does set it.
