Do you get any kind of error message?
Golden Rigby Feb 23, 2016 @ 6:49am

Is this a family that is moved in (on a lot)?
Or on a clipboard?

When moved in - you should be able to save the game - from the options menu.

But - from Edit Town - to save a family to the library - you first must evict them from the lot.

OR - you may prefer to "Resume Game" - to get back to playing that family, where there might be another way to save them to the library?

evict = move the family out (or off of) the lot, on to the clip board.

from Edit Town if you want to save a family to the library - you must first get them off of the lot.
When you click on the lot - should open a window for that family.
Do you know "left" from "right"?

the "left" most option at the bottom of that window is suppose to move the family out - just confirm that is what you want to do when the game asks.

Once the family is on the clipboard - you can click that image - and it will give you an option to save to the library.

Did you get the family to the clipboard - an image on the left side of the screen?
Were you able to click that image - and get a pop-up-window for the family?
Does that pop-up-window have a folder-like option near the center at the bottom?

o.O you don't need to evict them... you click the folder icon, and it gives you a window that allows you to save only the family, or the family and house to the bin.

@ caleb68 - Just where are you finding this "folder icon"? I'm to click?

  1. The only choice I know of that allows a selection between
"Family Only" or "Family and House" is the evict function!
  2. From "Edit Town" - the only folder icon I know of saves to the "library" NOT the "bin"!
  3. While I have figured out how to save individual Sims from Create-A-Sim,
I have yet to find a way to put a WHOLE family and house into THAT bin!

excuse me, save to the library, not bin, but, what your telling him to do is incorrect to save to the bin as well, as it doesn't work either, just tried it myself, just to the library.

far as where this folder icon is:
http://www.caleb68.com/sims3/savefamily.jpg

to save individual sims from a family to the bin (for create a family), far as I know they have to be the active family, and you would have to enablecheats via the console (ctrl+shift+c then type testingcheatsenabled true) then you can shift+click a sim and select edit in create a sim, once in there, you click the little ... on their icon at the bottom and save to bin, then cancel. The only sims that seem to have a issue saving to the bin (for create a family) are Aliens, they seem to lose the DNA ammount setting, guessing its just not saved.

edit in: far as I can tell the OP just wants to save the family, don't see him saying anything about saving to the bin (for create a family)

If there are currupt items in the family inventory or personal sims inventory it will cause it not to save even though it goes through the 'processing' bit and doesn't give you a error box, its possible that this is the case for you. A simple method to test this is select a different household and attempt to save them to the library (try with several different families), if it succeeds for them, then i'd be going through the sims family inventory and individual inventories to find out whats causing the problem. Nraas Debug Enabler can help clear out the sims inventory if its a item you can not remove by dragging it out or selling it. Be careful using the Debug Enabler.

If it doesn't work saving a different family to the library, its possible you have a mod installed that is causing the issue. The only real work around for that is removing the mod and attempting to load up your game and save the sims. If its a core mod, its likely you won't be able to recover your sims.

Edit In: Some people have stated that using the cell phone to move to a new town has fixed the 'wont save to bin' for their families, but not all people, If you want to attempt that I'd suggest making a secondary save first, and then do the cellphone move.
