Quick n' dirty way to make a indoor all season garden
this will be a simple example, can make more complex but they have to be at ground level. This is legit without cheats.

to do it with cheats - just enable 'moveobjects on' and skip all the steps, your sim can plant a plant just about anywhere with that cheat enabled.

Legit without Cheats:

1) give your sim all the seeds they need to plant

2) pause the game

3) go into build mode and make a square room with a door and ceiling. Punch out one piece of the wall, do NOT add a floor to the room.

4) exit build mode. While game is still paused, plant the seeds where you want them in the room.

5) go back into build mode, close the hole in the wall. exit build mode.

6) unpause game.

You sim will go in the door and plant the seeds in the ground of the room, after that you just need to make sure you keep it well fertilized, weeded and watered. the plants will last a rather long time if you do (I have all seasons maxed for days and my plants are lasting 1 1/2 season cycles indoors)

There are planters in the game but, haven't really been able to get the darn things to work for me, so I came up with this simple method of making a garden indoors. When I need to replant, i just pop out one piece of the wall and repeat 3-6.

If you have the into the future expansion all you need is the soil rugs that come with it - and if you want to grow trees you need to make your growing room at least two stories high.

Without the into the future expansion you can also use cheats - CTRL+Shift+C to bring up the console then type "testingcheatsenabled true" without the quotes. Then you can click to plant anywhere on the floor inside a building.

Be aware that if you are planting indoors during winter the planted seeds might look dormant at first - that only lasts for one day then they will grow normally.

doesn't even last a full day, I think its just the end day cycle. I'll have to try the rug thing :) didn't know they would grow plants.

awesome works :) better then a single dirt spot, its letting me plant 4 per square instead of 1. ty for the heads up on the rugs :) time to redo my basement.

so I've found one down side to using the carpets, the plants die off alot faster then my other method, converted one of the basement rooms for the carpets and the plants didn't even last 1 season vs. lasting 1 1/2 season cycles in my other method.

Did you use a different sim to plant or a different fertilizer? It's a Sim's gardening skills and what fertilizers you use that effects how long the plants live. Higher quality fertilizer actually speeds up plant growth.

I have 3 sims in the house currently, all three have 10 gardening skills, and they all have the greenthumb lifetime wish , so nope no difference there, and the same fertilizer is always used.

So, playing more with these soil rugs, there are downsides to them.

plants will wilt faster on them, you need to water plants more often.
weeds seem to grow more frequently on the garden rugs then soil when watering the plants daily.
plants can not be watered by sprinkers when planted on the soil rugs, the rugs ignore the sprinkers, so your sim has to manually water the plants every day. Nraas Tempest is supose to fix this from what I saw in several threads but looking over tempest I see no mention of addressing that issue.

I may end up going back to my method in post 1, as these garden rugs pretty much seem to require you to have a sim taking care of the garden 24/7, as were I didn't have to do that before.

I never used the sprinkler as sims just wanted to play in it all the time

I do have the Swift Gro gardening station from the sims 3 store which makes weeding, fertilizing and watering a breeze and is probably why that's never been an issue that I have noticed.

Sorry it didn't work out for you.

well least the first option does give people a valued way to do indoor gardens without the into the future pack. Been reading alot on the sprinklers, seems that EA knew they didn't work for the rugs for a rather long time and yet they never bothered to fix it, rather they tossed out the swift gro gardening station in the store which from what I've read, works with the rugs, sure you could confirm that. Seems they decided to leave the sprinklers broken so that people would spend more money.

Far as sims playing in the sprinklers, after upgrading them to auto sprinklers, the sims seem to leave them alone, if they aren't upgraded to auto, they seem to like to go out during the summer and play in them all the time regardless if they are indoor or outdoor.
