The Sims™ 3
Fire Station in Sunset Valley
I did 2 playthroughs with different Sims and made them firefighters in Sunset Valley. Why on earth does the alarm ring, then a fire-thingy shows up, and the next second it's gone and I can't do anything. I haven't had a single fire to extinguish yet, because it seems to be broken.

What can I do?

This is a known issue with the firefighter profession, I believe mostly or entirely limited to small fires and houses with foundations. The workaround is to send your firefighter sim to the sidewalk outside the lot (click on the ground and select Go Here), then manually onto the lot, and only then to the house itself to put out the fires.

Large fires and other emergencies should be fine, so your sim shouldn't run into this issue much, if at all, at higher levels of the profession.

You mean manually onto the lot where the fire is? I'll try that, thanks
I meant manually to just outside the lot, then manually onto the lot, then to the fire. It's almost like you're trying to sneak up on the fire so it can't disappear before your sim starts the assignment.

Doesn't seem to be working. I walked outside the Fire Station, on the sidewalk, walked back inside, then I walked to the lot where the fire was, but still the same problem, unfortunately
Okay, I kind of fixed it by rotating the Fire Station. I got a mission and it worked fine. But he isn't returning the Fire Truck now. I think this is another, different bug/glitch which screws up the Firefighter career, because now when I get a mission, it disappears again because the Fire Truck is still in the neighbourhood somewhere. I deleted it using testingcheatsenabled true but that didn't make the truck respawn.

On top of that, if that happens multiple times I don't see the point in upgrading the truck as it probably resets the entire thing when it has to respawn
I wasn't aware the Firefighter profession is known for such bugginess, sad to hear about it. Wasn't sure if there would be a point in mentioning this, though the fire alarm and truck are meant to be maintained to keep operating and so far neither of you brought it up at all. Probably that's because it's irrelevant to the issue, but I wouldn't be too shocked if maybe the health of your equipment serves as like the timer for your missions and the brief seeming resolution was more due to the fire alarm being reset to fixed and the truck still broken due to being in your sim's inventory or something, all I know is I didn't have issues myself as a Firefighter in Sunset Valley back in the day.

Trust me, the maintenence was fine. This entire story happened in the first 2 days of playing. So the equipment did not take a heavy beating anytime in this period. And the Fire Truck was in front of the house where the fire itself was, but couldn't be driven back to the station. I honestly can't believe this has never been fixed. Because from what I've seen and read about this online, a lot of people have had the same problems as I did, which is sad
I didn't have your particular issue, but I, too, was never successful at getting the firefighter profession to work. I'm thinking about trying it again to make sure it's still buggy for me. Maybe the next descendant in my current family will try to be a firefighter and I'll see if I can add any helpful tips or any failures that I've had.

I played the firefighter a long time ago, when the ep first came out, and remember playing it glitch-free for awhile before moving on to something else.

But maybe things have changed. There are items in the base game now that were never included when the game first came out. So who knows. It's so frustrating when things don't work as they should, hope you can get it resolved.

hmm. Have you tried playing the firefighter in Twinbrooks? That is the town it was designed for (and where I played). Maybe that has something to do with it.

You could also have a sim friend start a fire in their backyard (maybe put a grill in a shed that doesn't have a foundation). Have that sim call the fire dept then switch to your firefighter. If foundations are the problem. And then after a 2 or 3 fires you will have enough experience so that the game gives you larger fires.

Also, maybe tell the sim to swim in the pool after they call the fire department, so they don't accidentally burn up. while you're playing the firefighter.

The firefighter career broke, at least in part, after a later patch. I don't remember which one, but I also had no trouble playing through the career multiple times when I first bought the game.

The typical workaround for this issue is to just level up the sim, either with cheats or by having them work on the Athletic and Handiness skills, so they get to handle large fires and other emergencies rather than only small fires.

However, once the fire truck disappears, I think that sim's career is sufficiently borked that it needs to be removed. In this particular case, I'd have the sim quit, delete the fire station, save, quit, reload, place the fire station back, and make the sim rejoin. Mods can cheat up the career level and remove any stray fire trucks around town if necessary.

Oh, interesting! Yeah, that would explain things on my end, Firefighter was the first profession I tried and I'm again pretty sure Ambitions is the first expansion I got and I probably did it before getting my next expansion which was probably Late Night.

Yeah, that's a decent possibility which goes along with the patch puzzlezaddict brought up, perhaps some of the new items which came in the problem patch are causing the issue.
