The Sims™ 3

The Sims™ 3

is there a way to disable a dlc?
I got into the future and it lags like ♥♥♥♥♥, was wondering if there was a way to disable/ remove it.

The only way I'm aware of, and I could be wrong, is to totally uninstall the game (you can easily back up saves and similar content like that), and then disable the DLC through the game's properties in your library so it doens't install and then reinstall the game.

Here are the steps to do this:

  1. In your Steam Library, right-click The Sims 3 then choose Properties
  2. Under Properties, go to the DLC tab and untick the EPs you don't want.
  3. Shut down Steam.
  4. Uninstall The Sims 3 using the Control Panel under Windows (in Add/Remove Programs, or
  5. Programs and Features, depending on your version of Windows).
  6. Re-start Steam and make sure it is in Online mode.
  7. Re-install The Sims 3 (but first make sure the EPs you don't want are still unticked in the DLC area).

alright, shame the only way is to completely uninstall it but cheers

Ooo, no, don't uninstall the whole game! (Or at least try this method before uninstalling/reinstalling.)

Section 4.4 of my guide, below has step-by-step instructions for uninstalling individual EPs.

I was aware of that method too. However it's rather technical. I figured someone that went to ask for help would not be up to that task and figured the more direct method was simplier and less prone to error. the way you detailed in there is very easy to get wrong if you don't know exactly what you're doing.

I figured it was best to give them the choice of which way to go, depending on their confidence.

Really, my method is not that hard, so long as the person can follow directions. And it's considerably faster than re-downloading Sims (and may cost less if you have limits on your downloads since Sims 3 is HUGE). :steamhappy:

cheers guys, I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling anyway because I didnt see your comment there : 3 but i'll keep in mind your method as well if I ever need to uninstall a dlc again

The other method is more useful the more DLC you have. If you don't have much, it's not as big of a download. If you have most or all of them, you're definitely going to want to use the more complicated method because it'll be a lot more content to download in that case.

Definitely :-) I have all the DLC, and a monthly download limit from my ISP, so it's better for me.

And to point to the gorilla standing over there in the corner, the 1.69 patch (which requires migrating your game to Origin) allows you to simply deselect EPs and SPs that you don't want to use for your current game. No downloading, reinstalling or registry editing required. If you can click a check-box, you can make it work. I didn't find that particular feature to be too terribly useful and moved my game back to Steam for other reasons, but it's there if you feel it's critical to your game to have it.

It is there, but I strongly advise not doing it. The launcher is notoriously unreliable and the 1.69 patch prevents you from bypassing it. This can leave you in a situation of being unable to play the game at all because sometimes, for some people, the game will not launch when started from the launcher. It also forces you to launch the origin client, naturally since the game would be an Origin game in this case. The Origin client is far less efficient and more resource hungry than the Steam client.

If you want to select specifc game content to launch, you should use the Sims Game Selector. And I do apologize for not thinking of this sooner. But here it is:

From what I understand, this basically does the "technical" way of disabling DLC for you. So there's no mistakes since it automates the process. Way more sensible to try to use this rather than migrating to Origin for patch 1.69. I'm not entirely sure it works on the Steam version though, someone would have to check. All I have is the retail version.

Right - I've heard that about retail versions. Steam version is 1.67.2, with no update to force Origin integration.

Given the issues with Origin (and that if you have registered your game, you already have a copy on Origin if you'd prefer to use it), I strongly suggest not trying to update Steam Sims 3 to 1.69.

@Forzen Nord: Thanks for the link to the mod.

cheers all, turn out reinstalling it didn't make any different so I did that method thing and it worked! thanks!

Did someone with steam test the program I linked with a Steam version of Sims 3? I am uncertain if it works with the Steam version since I only have the retail version. But if it does, it would be the go-to method for disabling specific DLC.

I'll look into it over the weekend, if I have enough brain then to remember to do so :headcrab:
