For future reference, you can fix this by installing the NRAAS mod Master Controller.
http://nraas.wikispaces.com/MasterController
There are a few ways you can use this to fix it. You can go into the household options and to the object reset option and reset the problem object. If you can't figure out which object it is in the list, or you don't want to look for it, or have a lot of glitched objects, you can instead use the option called Reset Lot, also in the household options. That will fix every object on your lot that is glitched in this way. If this is happening in more than just your active household, you can nuclear and choose the option "Reset Everything" when selecting the Master Controller options from a computer or city hall in the Town Options section. It'll take a while, but it'll reset all objects in the town. This might actually help reduce lag if there are objects with these glitches you're not seeing because they're not in your active house.
For your other problem, you can fix that by using the reset sim option in Master Controller, you need the cheats module for that, on your roomate and that should fix the problem with the stuck needs bar. You could also manually type in the reset sim command into the console. But since you'd get Master controller anyway for glitched objects, why not simplify the process?
If you'd rather use the manual command, this is what you put into the cheat box:
resetsim Firstname Lastname
replace those with your sim's first and last name and they should reset. It should be noted that the reset sim option in Master Controller is a bit more powerful and is more likely to solve a problem than the console command is. Though for this particular problem it should be sufficient. Though you should still only use either option when you have a serious problem like this. Sometimes things go wrong. Like there are cases where resetting a plumbbot (from the Into the Future expansion) removes their trait chips.
For example: NRaas's Traveller fixes problems when Sims travel (to University or to vacation destinations), and Nraas's Overwatch automatically resets any Sim or animal who is stuck trying to get somewhere or age up, puts abandoned cars and children back where they belong, turns off unwatched TVs and unlistened-to stereos (left on when the Sim leaves home), resets glitched digital frames, and so on.
I also attempted the cheat 'resetsim' to see if that would restore my kid but didn't do anything. I tried to see if I could find to readd him to my home from the town editor but didn't have any luck there either. :-(
Time does stand still in your home world when you're off at the university, the future, or any of the vacation worlds. Make sure you have Traveller installed like cruinne mentioned.
