Also, what world are you playing? Some have different lighting effects so... does playing in a different world have the same "night's too dark" problem?
Apparently it's a Windows 8 compadibility issue. I had to turn off that feature on my computer when running the game. There was also a scaling box I had to check. I think I found the answer on The Sims 3 forums. It was so dark you literally couldn't see anything at night outside your house. Rooms inside were literally black except for what light illumination was there.
