Thought I was 99% certain that abandonware had malicious content on it including a virus that could potentially infect your computer. Why they would want to give away something for free without intentionally wanting to cause harm to someone's computer is beyond me. A long time ago for example I once successfully downloaded Civilization 2 on my computer for free because I missed playing it, but it got my computer infected with a virus as a consequence. However, at the same time just so that everyone is made aware I have never actually downloaded anything from abandonware. The free Civilization 2 download if I remember correctly was actually based on a Facebook advertisement that I had seen and fell victim to it not knowing at that time that my computer would get a virus if I were to successfully download Civilization 2 for free from that pop up advertisement.

abandonware is not what you or others think it is, it's taking games that are considered as if they are abandoned but that doesn't mean it is abandoned, it just means in this case TS2 is obsolete and ignored, but EA hold their copyright to it.

As for legal? it's copying and reproducing the game for use without EA's approval or knowledge on the basic level. That's just for starters.
Well, that's what I was guessing. I wonder that they don't get sued for doing this sort of thing and aren't forced to take such things off of their websites.

It depends on how EA wants to respond, but i'd imagine cease and desist letter is appropriate to make users and websites think twice because now EA is aware of it.
But if EA takes to court? that's anyone's guess.

you typically find such things in games that have been pirated and put up like it was free with no strings attached. usually some form of malware or another type of nasty software like a trojan, or a worm.

You get what you deserve in the end with things like that. So it's better to keep it on the side of legal where at least you won't find yourself having a bunch of nasty malicious programmes on your computer.

That is kind of my point here. Why give something away for free without any malicious programs added that is downloadable if it does not benefit the one giving away pirated games illegally? If only 1% of all pirated games does not have any malicious programs included then what is the point of downloading for free from something that is illegal? While not all free downloads are necessarily illegal (such as Fortnite for example does not actually cost any money to download, but it does include content where spending money on that game for additional content is optional after the free download) many of them are as well at the same time.

You can find The Sims 1 and 2 on MyAbandonWare.
EA gave Sims2 Complete Editions for free till the end of 2018, so no one will care if you downlaod it... I wish we could buy it on steam for cheap, since the OG game is a nightmare to make it work on Win11...

Also if you have a good Antivirus you should be fine, my Norton 360 didnt find anything suspicious in the files.

its so sad how old games from my child hood became forgotten.

Let's try to keep it on the legal side in this discussion rather than discussing how you rate your experience with pirated content, irrespective how much one cares or not on the subject.

But as you mentioned, it's on EA in the end what they do with TS1 and TS2, so maybe one day they'll put the ultimate version back on free again for a limited time. There is an anniversary coming up, however i won't get my hopes up as EA are likely to do something that isn't going to sit well with the community and probably get themselves burned for it.

I know what you mean, but if not pirated, it is almost impossible to get old games.

But yes, i do hope EA brings back the Complete editions for both The Sims 1 and The sims 2.
Id buy them both in a hearth beat if they bundle the 1 and 2 for up to 30€.
It would be a shame for such a great pice of gaming history to be forgotten.

I can only dream for it being availble on steam...man that'd be cool.

Almost impossible? Maybe for the 1st Sims game, but at least you can get The Sims 2 and at least some of its expansion packs from Amazon or Ebay to name just a few examples of this; although, I am guessing that you will have to get the disc version instead of being able to download immediately once you get them from one of those websites as well meaning that you will have to wait for the mail to arrive before you can even play The SIms 2 from one of those websites assuming that it is not a scam and those discs will work as intended when you first get them delivered to you. I also found another website that sells the entire Sims 2 pack apparently for a cheap and reasonable price, but it was mentioned for Mac only.

Necro but it's not that ridiculous really, people do it for archival purposes when companies stop selling their products.

It's not exactly immoral to "pirate" something when the company won't even sell it to you.
Good news! A re-release is coming!
