First, since you already tried opening the game, check to make sure the launcher is not still running in the background. If you are on Windows, go to the bottom right of your screen and click on the tiny ^ arrow. If the Sims 3 icon is in there, click on it and close the launcher.

Since this is a brand new computer, I'm guessing it has Windows 11, and the following information may not help you. If you are using Windows 10, then maybe something in this batch of stuff will be useful:

Sims3 - Game Won't Start

First thing to try:

  1. Press the Windows key + e which should open File Explorer.
  2. Open "Documents"
  3. Open "Electronic Arts"
  4. There you should find a folder named "The Sims 3". Change it's name to something else - such as "Old The Sims 3".
  5. See if the game will start up.

If it does, you know that the problem is in your old user files - something corrupt, a bad mod, bad custom content, something.

And here's an odd fix posted by someone:

I seem to have fixed the problem (although there may still be errors or bugs further on in the game). I am now able to run the game. The solution was to go to the game file under Program Files > Steam > steam > games. There I saw the Sims 3 Icon with a weird looking numerical name. I changed the name to The Sims 3 and now the game is running.

I'm sorry but why would you buy pc that has windows 11... Especially if you wanted to play games like sims 3 the game itself is kind of old and windows 11 is still like in beta I think and from what I heard most old games don't work on windows 11. I hope soon you will find a way to make it work

If you are not partial to Windows 11, then uninstall it and install Windows 10.

On this microsoft page, describing how to restore Windows 10 if Windows 11 causes problems (for someone who has upgraded with their current computer),

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/downgrade-from-windows-11-to-windows-10/84a2416d-ccfb-4d87-9eee-e1056591e91f

they recommend this page to find out how to do a clean install of Windows 10:

https://www.kapilarya.com/how-to-make-clean-install-of-windows-10

Or, you can do your own search on the subject by typing "how do i change from windows 11 to windows 10" in your browser.

I have the same issue. One of the reasons I bought my new laptop is to play this game.

Please be more specific on what worked for, since multiple solutions were posted here. Or are you just saying that the game works fine for you on Windows 11 without any tweaks.
