Inside your currentgame.sims3 folder, there should be three files called 1a5tf1l3.dat, Meta.data and TravelDB.package. These are the meta data files. They contain the information the game needs to load your town and are usually the ones causing the problem. Luckily, they can be safely replaced without loosing anything. They may be currupted, or, rarely, missing.
Make a back-up copy of your current game and then delete the three meta-data files. Copy and paste these files from your temporary game to your current game. Your game should now be playable. (Your load screen may be slightly odd the first time, due to this proceedure, but, will correct itself.) There will be no damage to your current sim or game.
I would suggest (your choice), after doing this, and before playing again, do some simple "housekeeping" on your computer unless you have software which does this for you automatically. Defrag and clearing cache should be done. Then use ccCleaner and Malwarebytes (free downloadable tools). This is not needed to cure your problem, but, may help to prevent a repeat.
I would also do a factory reset of your Sims 3 game, but, that also is not essential, I suggest it only to ensure your game is clean and working at its optimum.
I have not seen this problem in more than 5 years since installing software to do the housekeeping tasks automatically. Prior to that, I had the problem on a regular basis. I do not use mods and did a factory reset every couple of months.
