How do you force a mermaid use a boat?

On my file in Isla Paradisio, I have a family on a houseboat, including two mermaids (well, a merman and a mermaid, technically).

The thing that rather irritates me, though, is that the mermaids never use the jetskis in their inventory, even when that would be quicker than them swimming very long distances.

I don't mind them swimming for short-ish distances (like to a neighboring island or such).
But as it is, for one of them to reach a dive spot and explore, takes several hours for them to swim out to one.
Not to mention in cold weather, they run a high risk of freezing to death just trying to get back to land, let alone their house.

Is there a way I can trigger them to use their jetski for a long trip, rather than swimming?

You have to click on the water itself and click "Boat here" for mermaids.

I don't know why I never thought to try that.
For some reason, I thought you had to click the jetski and select "visit lot" or something. And never got that option.
Or just thought mermaids couldn't use boats at all.

I never thought to just click the water itself.
