I ignore the messages about going to work. In such a case, they are meaningless. The Sim does not need to go to work, and there will be no ramifications for them not going. The UI at the bottom has the correct information.
My first few ghost hunters did not complete all of their jobs by the end of their work hours, so I just had them continue what they were doing. They were exhausted at the end of each workday, but it was still fun, and at the higher career levels things got much easier.
The same is true for the detective career, which also tends to have a lot of night hours. The good thing about both of those careers is that you can skip jobs and skip days and it really doesn't affect things much, other than not advancing as fast in that career. I've had both types of characters go for months without doing a single job, because they were raising a child. (Both of them had been abducted and got pregnant.)
