Career path question.
If a particular career offers multiple paths, like Music does, can I take a different path in that career after reaching level 10 in a different path of that career? Say I reached Level 10 as a Rock musician; if I quit, can I later start over and do one of the other Music paths?

Well, quitting would zero out your progress in that career, as far as I recall. So, yes, you can choose a different career path, if your Sim signs up for that career again.

Does sims 3 not have the ability to start advanced in a career as in sims 2?

Hmmm........... perhaps I was wrong. I looked online and saw some 2014 threads talking about how restarting a career, after you have quit, will put you at level 5 of the career. It seems that, for at least some of the careers, that level was past the point where someone would choose a different career path. I have no idea if there were any patches since then that may have changed this.

I admit that it's been a very long time since I have quit a career, and maybe I never tried to restart the same career.

When a sim quits a career and rejoins, they stand to lose half of their level progress. So a Level 10 career sim would rejoin at Level 5. If you have them quit and rejoin again, that should bump them back to Level 2 (or 2.5, whatever that might mean).

The Music career splits at Level 6, I think most if not all of them that split do so, thus actually being bumped back down to Level 5 should be sufficient to make a different choice.

I was also referring to starting new careers at a higher level - I think that was part of University in Sims 2, does Sims 3 have that as well? (don't have that DLC).

It does indeed. Completing certain degrees gives you a higher starting level on related careers.
