Any carpools they have for work will still show up at the original house. Of course, you can always unlock the door for them when you want them to visit their parents.
The drawback of any additional homes in the same town is that they are treated as real estate, so you can't lock the doors/gates to outsiders. This might be a problem if the Sim living there is a celebrity.
Anyway, I will often split my families on several different lots when they have kids and grandkids. Although it's best if they are nearby lots. It would be too much of a hassle to keep making them travel a long distance to their new home on the occasions when they show up at the old house because you were busy with another family member.
