Every pack in The sims 4 has so far been more limited and more expensive than every pack in The sims 3 and The sims 2. If you can get it for free, by all means do it, but I wouldn't suggest investing money into it. Especially not when the game's crumbling under its own weight if you buy even half the DLC that's currently available, not to mention some DLC is not usable and will be broken by updates further down the line, such as
- no way of curing your Vampires if you bought the Vampire pack. They stay allergic to human food and still burn in sunlight if you cure them, so it's sure death.
- broken Dine Out. Restaurant experience without mods is waiting a full sim day to be server, or if you're unlucky, the cook will break and nobody will be getting served leaving you awkwardly stuck in the chair and having to reload.
- Get To Work by now is warmly referred to as "get to bug", for as soon as one career gets fixed, another gets broken. Doctor used to be unplayable without cheats due to requiring to check on a pregnant sim and no pregnant sims spawning. Detective career is the completely broken one now.
Oh and don't buy any pack whose influence you don't want to see in other towns. By game design, the quirkyness of each pack should be isolated to each pack, however that's not what currently is happening. To give an example, Strangeville shouldn't be spreading if you haven't interacted with. After the patch that came with the new magic pack, Strangeville spreads into completely new saves, making you lose control of your own sim for a few hours every day if you get this bug, meaning you'll have to go to Strangeville and solve it, before you can proceed with normal play.
Because there's no way to reverse a patch, the safest approach would be to wait until TS4 is no longer in development and buy only what's NOT broken.
My big beef, and along with total price the reason I never got it, is that there was no technical advancement on the back end. Specifically, it's a very memory intensive game still running on 32 bit design. Since memory was already a limiting factor, this made many improvements zero sum (largely at the expense of the open world, but also features like CAS and the initial plan to omit pools).
So Sims 3 has a bigger scope. It's a town sim, not just a lot sim.
The flipside is that Sims 3 is a technical mess. The game is buggy and unstable, and some of the expansions are particularly bad.
The counter to this is Nrass. Overwatch, Error Trap, and if changing worlds, Traveler, go a long way to fixing the game. The full suite allows you to deal with most problems, plus massively customize the game.
It takes effort and time. A fair bit of it. But Sims 3 can be stable on long games. I'm sure there are fixes for 4 too, but the level of customization is so much higher in 3 that I'm willing to forgo the improvements 4 has made.
Traveler I disliked how it affected the University experience, but I'd agree with the other mods and maybe MasterController to actively fix some problems. It's ridiculous though that a publisher puts out a game where players have to do so much work themselves to fix it
Sims 3 :
Pro's : A lot more content and customisation in general, larger worlds and more interesting mods. Expansions come with a lot more content. Sim's have more interesting traits and can (re)act very different because of this. Easier to handle a couple of sims. Custom worlds.
Con's: Takes some research to make it run smoothly with a lot (or certain specific) expansion packs installed. Mods will be required for this.
Sims 4:
Pro's : Runs better out of the box. Sims are easier to mold into shape and are easier to make look better.
Con's : Lacks depth in gameplay and lacks customization. No open world. No custom neighbourhoods. Sims all behave the same. Add enough DLC and it will start run bad too, but in a different way. Lacks manage tools to handle multiple sims. DLC lack content compared to Sims 3 and 2.
