The Sims™ 3

don't buy The Sims 4, buy this instead, here's why
I have a literal slew of everything that is wrong with The Sims 4 in video form. Not everything will apply to everyone, but if you're considering buying The Sims 4, have a watch. Here's the original 5 parter of why I personally dislike it:

https://youtu.be/_Ow56ducNoQ

https://youtu.be/whkFEK5azGM

https://youtu.be/tfg_cmMYoIY

https://youtu.be/jUL-iEvLZn4

https://youtu.be/lwfwx4mZ4tM

here is a video about smaller issues. Such as countertop colours not matching, lighting bugs, falling through the floor while taking a picture bugs, etc

https://youtu.be/7XgOxuSJXBQ

Also, unlike this game, that is finished development and you know what you are getting, The Sims 4 is currently in development. Meaning if your game breaks in the middle of it all, there's no refunding it. It broke for me about 2 years ago. It was never patched. I can't do anything about that.

https://youtu.be/EExUEuX-THQ

As for how long it will still be in development? About 5 more years senior producer says. I don't want to think how buggy it will be after that.

https://youtu.be/VUpDGAXEofI

So yeah, The Sims 3 is not perfect. But you can use mods to fix the worst issues. And at least your game won't be broken further. Plus you get so so much more bang for your buck. Stay away from The Sims 4.

Sims 4 is a fantastic game in its own right. does it live up to sims 3 for a lot of simmers? no, it doesnt. but the modders have literally saved this game and if you invest in the packs (that go on sale as well) it will enhance your gameplay just like in Sims 3. everyone is gonna have their opinion, telling others to not buy a game just becuz you dont like it is silly, hell they even gave the game out for free a couple months ago, you gonna tell people to not get this game for free when available, cuz ts definitely worth all of that lol. i only paid $10 for it from Gamestop, so basegame pricing isnt and shouldnt really be a big issue. now the packs are pricy, but they have bundling options and regular half off sales as well. dont pay full price for anything, it will eventually go on sale just be patient. anyways, i agree and disagree with this. while sims 3, which is a complete game i might add, is better, sims 4 can be just as entertaining. these same complaints are always going to be in the games, the same thing simmers are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about now are the same things we were ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about then. also, university is coming to sims 4 too so theres that to look forward to as well.

Every pack in The sims 4 has so far been more limited and more expensive than every pack in The sims 3 and The sims 2. If you can get it for free, by all means do it, but I wouldn't suggest investing money into it. Especially not when the game's crumbling under its own weight if you buy even half the DLC that's currently available, not to mention some DLC is not usable and will be broken by updates further down the line, such as

- no way of curing your Vampires if you bought the Vampire pack. They stay allergic to human food and still burn in sunlight if you cure them, so it's sure death.

- broken Dine Out. Restaurant experience without mods is waiting a full sim day to be server, or if you're unlucky, the cook will break and nobody will be getting served leaving you awkwardly stuck in the chair and having to reload.

- Get To Work by now is warmly referred to as "get to bug", for as soon as one career gets fixed, another gets broken. Doctor used to be unplayable without cheats due to requiring to check on a pregnant sim and no pregnant sims spawning. Detective career is the completely broken one now.

Oh and don't buy any pack whose influence you don't want to see in other towns. By game design, the quirkyness of each pack should be isolated to each pack, however that's not what currently is happening. To give an example, Strangeville shouldn't be spreading if you haven't interacted with. After the patch that came with the new magic pack, Strangeville spreads into completely new saves, making you lose control of your own sim for a few hours every day if you get this bug, meaning you'll have to go to Strangeville and solve it, before you can proceed with normal play.

Because there's no way to reverse a patch, the safest approach would be to wait until TS4 is no longer in development and buy only what's NOT broken.

It's a mixed bag.keeping in mind I've never played 4 myself, there are some neat features. I'm particularly jealous of the multi tasking (though I've not looked at it in a while, and I get the impression that I am overly generous in my estimation of how well it works).

My big beef, and along with total price the reason I never got it, is that there was no technical advancement on the back end. Specifically, it's a very memory intensive game still running on 32 bit design. Since memory was already a limiting factor, this made many improvements zero sum (largely at the expense of the open world, but also features like CAS and the initial plan to omit pools).

So Sims 3 has a bigger scope. It's a town sim, not just a lot sim.

The flipside is that Sims 3 is a technical mess. The game is buggy and unstable, and some of the expansions are particularly bad.

The counter to this is Nrass. Overwatch, Error Trap, and if changing worlds, Traveler, go a long way to fixing the game. The full suite allows you to deal with most problems, plus massively customize the game.

It takes effort and time. A fair bit of it. But Sims 3 can be stable on long games. I'm sure there are fixes for 4 too, but the level of customization is so much higher in 3 that I'm willing to forgo the improvements 4 has made.

I had both sims 3 and 4 on Origins before I lost my account to a hacker. Sims 4 is garbage if you ask me. I miss the old days of Sims where even crooks can steal your stuff if you didn't have security.

Thanks mirta000 - I finally had time to watch, and I largely agree. I've been playing since Sims 1, and Sims 4 is such a let-down in so many ways. It feels so stifled, and - I agree - as though adults aren't wanted in the franchise any more. :bbtgem:

I will never see what people see in this game. It's ugly as hell, runs like crap, venues are basically empty, and the open world is only good for watching you sims go into a rabbit hole. You want a good sims game? Go to Sims 2. Change your title to "don't buy The Sims 4, and 3 , get Sims 2 instead"

I decided against buying any new Sims title until EA fixed the bugs in Sims 3. World Adventures is particularly problematic - the adventure board stopping working, some tombs that have routing issues that mean you need to teleport to get through them, I've had sims go on a holiday only to come back without skills learned or items picked up (so all the hours spent on holiday haven't registered) and now I'm stuck trying to complete the last tomb in China (as I'm trying to have a Sim collect every relic) when I have to take a second vacation to France, only to have the quest reset when I arrive back in China (and then get told I have t go back to France and do that annoying chain again for an item I already have in my possession)

Traveler I disliked how it affected the University experience, but I'd agree with the other mods and maybe MasterController to actively fix some problems. It's ridiculous though that a publisher puts out a game where players have to do so much work themselves to fix it

I know our mods are not meant to be the focus point of this thread, but may I ask what negative impact Traveler has on Uni World? I've never heard this complaint before -- some players don't like StoryProgression running on that world, others prefer it, but Traveler shouldn't be having much of an impact other than making the travel transitions back and forth less prone to failure. And it does allow sims who are teens, pregnant, or friends of the family to attend as well as by option allowing sims to bring their pets with them to Uni. Those aren't really things that can be negative though, since they are all optional.

Both have pro's and con's. But, if you put some effort into it, there is no real competition really.

Sims 3 :
Pro's : A lot more content and customisation in general, larger worlds and more interesting mods. Expansions come with a lot more content. Sim's have more interesting traits and can (re)act very different because of this. Easier to handle a couple of sims. Custom worlds.
Con's: Takes some research to make it run smoothly with a lot (or certain specific) expansion packs installed. Mods will be required for this.

Sims 4:
Pro's : Runs better out of the box. Sims are easier to mold into shape and are easier to make look better.
Con's : Lacks depth in gameplay and lacks customization. No open world. No custom neighbourhoods. Sims all behave the same. Add enough DLC and it will start run bad too, but in a different way. Lacks manage tools to handle multiple sims. DLC lack content compared to Sims 3 and 2.
