The NRaas Saver mod will regularly prompt you to save: http://nraas.wikispaces.com/Saver
I think the reason the game doesn't autosave and the reason the Saver mod only reminds you to save is that the default "Save" function is an almost-sure way to eventually lose your save. It's prone to becoming corrupt and, because it adds on to the file each time rather than replacing it with a new file, the file grows larger with every save. On some computers, it renders the file eventually too problematic to load.
So, the advice is to always use "Save as..." rather than "Save" anyway, even if you keep the same file name. For extra protection, also use the ErrorTrap mod from NRaas as well, as it can help with save file health.
