The Sims™ 3

Another UL question....please
Again, I've looked this up, but not sure how to word it to get correct answer. I found stuff on moving, getting roommates...etc but not on this:
I played UL for the first time after the last sale Steam had. I only did it once and it was with two couples from one of my games and we picked a home of our own to share. Fine...I played and discovered the basics of UL.
This time I decided to use a single YA who aged up in the family and I thought it would be fun to pick a dorm and see how that plays out. So my dude is now in an all male dorm.
My question is, what is the game decider as to who else I am able to control in my dorm? I had 7 others move in and I had no control over them other than to track them down by clicking their portrait. Then about two sim days later I was able to control one of them and then a second. I've been there 4 sim days and still only have control over my sim and two of my dorm mates. I have no idea what happened or how I am now able to control them. I'm fine with not controling any or having control of all of them so it's not a big deal, but I'm curious as to what I or my sim did that gave me control over the two I can manipulate? Is it about how friendlly my sim is with them?

You shouldn't be able to control anyone except sims that you sent to University from your home world. If you can, it's probably a bug. You should also only see the portrait (on the left hand side of the screen) of the sim(s) you sent, and not other roommates unless you're referring to the social bar at the bottom.

Have any odd mods installed?

I guess a genie sim could also create some weirdness with regards control too.

Nope, I have all 8 roommates listed on the left and I can control two of them but not the rest.
It was that way from the start as soon as they showed up.
I have just the MC and MC Cheats along with error trap and overwatch. BTW I am currently playing and came here to say I suddenlly have over 256 recorded errortraps in the game and IDK WTF is going on! This just happened. But all the sims are resetting! Crazy!

One of the NRaas mods causes all of the uncontrollable roommates portaits to appear on the portrait panel. I thought it was Traveler, but maybe it's one of the others. No, they aren't supposed to become controllable that would be a bug, they are there so you can focus the game camera on them if you want to. I would use MC's Add Sim to shove them into a different dorm or off campus house. You would have to do something similar if they followed your sim home and became part of the active household permanently.

I think you know where you have to bring ErrorTrap logs so we can tell you what's going wrong. For some reason NRaas, the site and our message boards I mean, appears to be outside of your comfort level, but that is where support is provided.

It does sound like this Uni term is glitching up to the point where it's becoming a waste of time to continue with it, though. Can you revert to before ever leaving home and try again? And I would suggest the Traveler mod if you don't already have it.

Good call Igazor. I looked into it, and it seems that Nraas PortraitPanel can cause the roommates to show up on the left, and Nraas StoryProgression can cause university roommates to be added to the household (and thus controllable).

It is *highly* recommended that you don't activate Nraas Story Progression in University, Future, or World Adventures worlds and that you only use it for the base world. It should prompt you when you visit a world for the first time. Just say no.

I'd definitely recommend starting again with an earlier (pre UL) save. Double check which mods are in your packages folder - MC+Cheats, Errortrap and Overwatch shouldn't cause problems.

Yes, it does make sense that PortraitPanel would be the one that extends the panel to include non-selectable roommates in any household including the dorms, I should have thought of that. PP's options can be arranged to stop it from doing that if desired, although I believe most players appreciate the convenience as long as things continue to work properly.

Wouldn't be so quick to blame StoryProgression, although we have heard this before. I've been using SP in the WA worlds, Uni, and Oasis for years without any mishaps like this and so have many of our members (I'm actually from NRaas in case you didn't know). There was a brief time right when the Uni EP was released that no one should have been using SP on Uni World until the mod was updated for it, but that interim period lasted only a few weeks and was of course many years ago. Somehow rumors about how "bad" the mod is for foreign, non- homeworld environments spun out of that and out of control, it seems. Same thing happened with Oasis Landing just after ITF was released but only for a brief period until the mod was updated.

It's admittedly possible, although we've never been able to prove it because we would have to be able to re-create the issue first, that the household/travel party glitch might be triggered by having SP's progression activated in these foreign worlds but not having another mod that it is mistakenly relying upon to be there like Traveler or one of the others.

Thank you both! I will not use the SP mod next time. I didn't really mean to click it this time, but I did. As for where I post. It's not really a comfort level thing, I just don't know where all to post things and what the best place shoudl be. I do most of my stuff through Steam and was a CitiesSKylines player for a couple years and we usually posted here or at the Paradox site. Sorry if that is wrong.
Exactly where should I post? I know the Nraas wiki site is closeing down and I have not seen where they are moving yet. I'm just not very savvy with all this and honestly never really used to ask much or post much about every other game I play. However, The Sims has a lot of issues and gliches and I'm also not used to that either. LOL. I think I only asked 2 questions the entire time I played Cities Skylines and I never post about the other games I play here. I really never did much gaming other than Sim City and CS...the rest of the stuff I played on my PC seperate from any online stuff. I don't even have Facebook, Twitter or any other of those kinds of accounts. And I'm only on YouTube because it's easier to watch videos, but I don't do anything but watch there and occasionally comment if the mood hits me.

BTW: I finally sped through the UL and the two character tried to come home with me. I haven't decided weather to set them up in Bridgeport somewhere or just kill them off. The NRaas thingys went off endlessly for about two sim days before finally stopping. I ended up with hundreds of reports. IDK. weird!

One difference here is that TS3 is not so much a game (to many if not most of us) but a platform on which we spin our stories. And the platform is hugely cracked, so different kinds of assistance are needed from different sources for serious players who want to bring their games to a new level and sidestep as many of the bugs and glitches as possible.

This is all on our homepage, but how to become an NRaas member (required to upload and post), it's a two step process, Wikispaces account first then request NRaas membership.
http://www.wikispaces.com/user/join
http://nraas.wikispaces.com/space/join

Where to upload zipped together (please!) error and other script logs for help:
http://nraas.wikispaces.com/How%20To%20Upload

Then open up a support thread on Chatterbox, the ErrorTrap Issues board, or the Issues board for the mod that seems to be causing problems or not fixing problems as intended. We'll see it wherever you post it over there.

You can dismiss/ignore the warnings about Wikispaces shutting down, it is business as usual at NRaas until this affects us and that won't be until October. User accounts will port over to the new site when it's ready, at least as best we are able to.

Cool thanks I will do that from now on and likely use the same name if it's available. How freakin weird is it that those two sims came home with me? LOL one of them was an annoying a-hole and my sim fought him every time I saw him, the other hit on my sim a lot and I gave in and woohooed because why not? His fiance was at home in Bridgeport and expirmenting is what college is all about LOL. But now I'm afraid he may nark my sim out so I will likely just kill them off to avoid the drama...plus it's a lot harder to make up with sims than it is to date or bed them! (without mods that is)

I dunno, sounds like a fun storyline to me even if it was due to a glitch.

Look what followed me home from Uni, honey (or mommy as the case may be), can I keep them? I promise to feed them, take them for walks, clean my room...etc. :D

LOL IKR? Yeah. I just couldn't bring myself to kill them off. Even if one was my sims whipping boy. The Slayers were living in a 6 bedroom apartment but only 4 sims. (no longer vampires since I either got rid of them all or change them back to human I liked Elvira so I changed her back. she's just an evil party girl now) So they are now living with the Slayers and remain my sims friends from college.

I'll bow before your wisdom on whether SP is to blame or not. While looking into the problem I came across other threads with similar problems that /seemed/ to be an SP issue, but of course every situation is different.

Many, many thanks for your work on the NRAAS suite. Those mods have elevated TS3 far beyond its origins.

Agreed!

The bowing is not necessary, but it's always nice to hear from happy "customers." I'm not a regular fixture here, there is an allowed level of toxicity on these boards that clearly comes with the territory but that makes things here just a bit outside of my comfort level at times. But you know where to find us.

And JohnL, you are now an NRaas member. Or someone who looks just like you is. :)

It's me. =-) Thank you!

And yes, I don't get the animosity and anger stuff, (like there seems to be on many sites) but some seem to thrive on it. There's enough crap in the world, I try to not contribute other than thoughtful and intelligent discussion. Sure things can be heated, but civility should always be at the forefront of any interactions online or in RL.
