If cruinne's solution doesn't work and if you'd like to experiment a bit, go get the DebugEnabler mod from nraas.net (it lets you do some things the regular console won't let you do).
Once installed and in-game, click on City Hall->NRaas->DebugEnabler->Sim->Reset Homeworld. This usually kicks a lot of those stuck problems loose since it resets everything.
There are some changes to Sims or the household that result in routine things like "go to work" and "go to school" going all kinds of wacko at times, and stuff like changing traits or LTW's might be causing that wacko to kick in. There are also some social interactions that get hung and cause some strange behavior (I found three of them on my Sim last night), but cruinne's fixes would take care of those.
Resetting a world is a MasterController function; that does something entirely different.
Absolutely! Just tried to do that (child couldn't go to school not due to school overcrowding) and realized that I had put the wrong click sequence in my answer. Need to change your handle from igazor the Magificent to Speedy (it's easier to type, too).
