The Sims™ 3

The Sims™ 3

Game stuck in black screen
Alright so it started when I added new homes, hairs and worlds (Lucky Palms, Sunlit tides, Aurora Skies, Roaring Heights, and Dragon Valley)
when I thougth EVERYTHING has installed successfully, my game cant start
intead its just stuck in a black screen and when I do the CTRL ALT DEL thing apparently my game isnt responding.

I've tried :
- Removing everything in Downloads folder
- Removing worlds I've installed
- Deleting "Featured Items" bc I read it works on some people

after ALL of that, the game still "not responding" aka black screen.

Any ideas?

Try:
  1. Press Windows Key + e to open Quick Access in File Explorer.
  2. Open Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3.
  3. There, look for the Options file (may also be "Options.ini" if you have file extensions visible).
  4. Right-click it and choose "Edit".
  5. Look for the line reading "fullscreen = 1".
  6. Change the one to a zero, then save and close the file.
  7. Try starting the game.
If it works, you will be in windowed mode - once the game starts, just go into game settings and change the video options to better suit your display.

If you are playing on Windows 10, the game requires .NET Framework 3.5 and does not install it. This is great in this case because it is already installed on Win10; it's just disabled by default.

Use your Windows search box to find "turn windows features on or off". One of the results will say "Control Panel". Click it and .NET 3.5 will be the first checkbox. Check it and click OK. Restart your computer, give it a few minutes in case Windows wants to snag updates (it probably won't, but you never know with Microsoft), and try to launch.

If that doesn't work and you are playing through Steam, I'd also recommend trying to launch the game directly (the "Play" button in Steam launches the launcher). The game's executable is at

\Steam\steamapps\common\The Sims 3\Game\Bin\TS3W,exe (you cannot do this with an Origin installation)

If that doesn't work, see cruinne's troubleshooting guide (Section 3 is stuff that can cause black screens)

I'm really sorry for being a big noob about this, but I hope to hear from you soon! :D

UPDATE 1 :
I change the launch options (Properties > Set launch options) to
"D:\Steam\steamapps\common\The Sims 3\Game\Bin\TS3W.exe" %command%

and the game goes back to blackscreen :(

UPDATE 2 :
I deleted the "%command%" and now it works! :)

My experience is that if you're running the game as an admin, you must also run Steam Overlay as an admin because if the overlay has fewer permissions than the game, it won't work properly. You can find it in the Steam folder itself, as GameOverlayUI.exe.

Thank you for the reply, now Im getting the same black screen problem again :(
I tried to exclude Isla Paradiso from the game and so I unticked it, my steam automatically removed it when I tried to play, a black screen and not responding happens again.

I tried to clean the temp files too, then I open the TS3W as usual, not by Steam launcher. It worls.

One more time, from the launcher, black screen is still happening.

I went to clean temp files again, verify the integrity, and it doesnt work until now.

I'm sure my video card is still updated, do you have any diea to make it work? thank you again

In case this does not help - please backup the indicated folder before deleting it! ... then you can restore from the backup if the delete doesn't help? or re-include things to find what is causing your issue?

For a worst case - you do NOT know what else to try - delete "<documents>\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3" folder; that is delete the indicated "The Sims 3" folder. Then in your Steam Client > Library > Games - right click on "The Sims 3" and select properties - "The Sims 3 - Properties" > LOCAL FILES > "VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME FILES ..." - allow this to complete, then reboot your computer and see if you can get past your black screen issue?

If this does get you back into The Sims 3 - then you have the lengthy task of adding back what has been removed (saving actual save-game-files until last), until you find what is causing your issue ...
