Roommates
I have The Sims 3 and all expansion packs on Origin, just so you know.

I am playing with a character right now and I want someone to be my roommate. It is part of the UL expansion but I know you can ask someone to be your roommate in your own world. The Sim I want to be my roommate, we have the 'old friends' status and I can ask her to move in with me, but that is not what I want. Can this action only be done with good/best friends or is there something else that is messing this up?

Thanks!

Roommates are technically members of the virtual homeless NPC "household," even when they are living in a proper house and paying rent to the owner. If you make this other sim homeless somehow and catch her before the game tries to do something else with her, the social interaction should become "Ask to be Roommate" instead of "Ask to Move In." Or, in that case, you might get both choices.

If you happen to be using mods, NRaas MasterController has an Add Roommate command that could be used on the sim while your resident one is active or on the ground of your home lot or its map tag to bypass the other restrictions and not give them a choice in the matter.

I do not use mods, no. And I have not seen the ''Ask to be Roommate'' interaction, and that really bothers me. I was curious if the friends status could be the problem but I guess not. And I do not completely understand what you mean with making one sim homeless.

I'm a bit confused what you are asking? Having someone to move in doesn't make you lovers or anything. Once they are roommates you can control them as you do your sim and your two incomes combine as well. So you can make happen whatever you wish between the two.
Just being roommates, lovers or married is sort of the same in simland, other than sleeping arrangements. The only thing that wont happen is sleeping in the same bed unless you are related or dating. So if you want them living with you just use the ask to move in option and give them another room and bed to sleep in and keep interactions friendly instead of romantic.

The roommate system is part of the Uni EP. Roommates so designated are non-controllable sims living in your house and paying rent, they do not become part of your household.

What I was trying to say is that it's not the friendship relationship that is the issue, it's that the other sim is already a town resident and has or is a member of her own household. Evict her by way of Edit Town to make her homeless so she can qualify to become one of the things that homeless NPCs can be (Role Sim, Service Sim like maids and butlers, Roommates). If that doesn't work out or if she gets away from you and seems to disappear from the game, then quit without saving and try again another way.

The action ''Ask to move in'' and ''Ask to be Roommates'' is different. The moving in action makes the Sim you ask, controllable and really ''living'' with each other. The Roommate action makes the Sim you ask to stay at your house. You will not be able to control this Sim and the Sim will pay a rent. I want her to be my roommate for 1 week or so, then send her away. A good friend of my Sim died because of a meteor and he is pretty lonely. That is why I want a roommate for my Sim, and not just a random one.

The Sim I am talking about is the University mascot (lol I know). But my Sim and her became good friends and I just do not know what is the issue.

He just told you: if she is part of a household, she can't become your Sim's roommate. You need to evict her and make her homeless first.

But she does not have a household, for as far as I know.

Oh. Hmm. The Uni Mascot is usually homeless already although as a Role Sim they don't have to be. Can you see if she has a house of her own or with others on the map someplace? Does she ever "go home" when not doing the mascot stuff?

Another way might be to go ahead and ask her to move in and then evict her to see if the Ask to Be Roommate option appears at that point, again don't save if this messes things up or she runs away on you.

When I invite her to my place, she DOES go home, but that is a common thing for every Sim.
I will check if she has a place on the University map. I will not save the game then and try the second thing. Thanks for your help.

Sorry, I never noticed because I guess I always just asked them to move in and shared income, rent etc. If I want them gone I just move them out.

It only just occurred to me that an active sim, one that is controllable and part of your actively being played household, cannot be the Uni Mascot. So what I suggested with the move in and evict right away might work, but she might lose her Mascot status along the way. Depends on how quickly the game reacts to a Role Sim like that suddenly being part of the household even for just a moment.

It's also possible that without mods there is a block on Mascots being Roommates. But still sounds like fun trying to make this work the way you wanted, somehow.

I have not tried asking to "become a room-mate" with mascots, but, there are certain AI sims which have reduced interactions available so. Some of these you can ask to move-in, they change to normal AI sims if you do that.

It is possible to ask a member of another household to "become a room-mate". I frequently make a single sim, place them in a house, then get my playing sim to ask them to become a roommate. It can be useful to have a little extra income without having to control the sim. Try this with a tidy. handy sim. (maid to measure!)

I would suggest, if you can "ask to move in" but not "roommate" a sim you particularly want, you ask them to move in, immediately use the split-up household option in edit town and place them on a tiny empty lot then asap get your sim to visit and ask them to roomate. You will not get an answer, but, shortly after the sim should turn-up in your home as a room-mate. Don't forget to set your room-mate preferences or you will find your house filled with strangers.

Just a thought, is your sim living in a dorm, or in a house which you are renting? This will make a difference. You need to be living in a house with at least one spare bedroom.

All A! sims with a specified purpose such as maid or repairman automatically become un-employed if they move-in. I have not tested, but, it is logical that nascot will be the same.

There is a difference between Service Sims and Role Sims. They are two very different classifications and are treated differently by the game.

Service Sims are those who (typically) are called to or arrive at your sim's house to perform their services. Those would be maids, butlers, babysitters, mail delivery sims, the repo sim, grim reapers, time travelers, etc. Service Sims can never be residents or Roommates, it is correct that they will lose their Service designation immediately if they are asked or forced to move in.

Role Sims include those who are tied to role giving objects in town like cash registers, bars, bouncer ropes, tattoo chairs, etc. Role Sims can be homeless or residents, but they aren't meant to be part of the actively played household. They will stand to lose their Role assignments if they become residents, but it's not necessarily an immediate thing like the Service kind and they can be Roommates.

Uni Mascots and a couple of others like the WA Special Merchants and the Paparazzi are special categories and are what are known as Global Role Sims (not tied to an object, but not Service either as they wander around town all day while on duty). They may or may not be handled differently from other Role Sims.

I am playing with an house with 2 bedrooms. So it should be possible.

Igazor, I did not have time left yesterday so I will try your thingy right now. I will let you guys know if it worked or not.
