Switching from the disk version to the Steam version
I've had the disk version of The Sims 3 for a very long time. With the current sale on The Sims 3 and Expansion Packs, it's hard to resist snatching up the main game and a fist full of expansion packs.

The Question: Can my save files be transferred to the Steam Version? How? I don't have any Custom Content or mods to worry about. I plan to uninstall the disk version before installing the Steam version.

yes it should, just copy your saves folder to C:\Users\{your user}\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 once installed and atleast run once

Litterally the only difference between the two versions is the install location and the Steam version doesn't require Origin while the disc version does. There are even instructions out on what regkeys need to be copied to a different location to convince Origin you have a retail version if you install the Steam one.

Thank you for the replies. Google is my friend. I should have searched there first. Looks like it's no biggie to transfer the save files.

Can I transfer my Origin licenses and packs for the Steam version? then I can actually expand with steam for my Sims future.

Unfortunately no. Only in the other direction.

Hello. :) So I really don't get it. Why can't I buy a dlc from here, for $5 or $10 and activate it to my game in origin, where I have to get it for $40??? This makes no sense..

Because, according to EA, they're incompatible, and Steam can't sell you an EP without you owning the base game first because, otherwise, you can't install it. (And, you don't get the keys until it's installed, and you can't register it on Origin until you have the key.)

So basically: it was done a stupid way by EA, but the end effect is that if you want to buy an EP or SP on Steam, you must at least own the base game on Steam.
Because EA needs ways to keep/move users onto Origin.

You can, but Steam cannot sell you an Expansion or Stuff pack if you do not first own the base game on Steam - Steam never sells DLC to those who do not own the base game first.
Sims 3 is a game from before 2011 when EA broke steams terms of service and launched Origin. EA eventualy got games back on steam but with a diffrent contract then most.

You can use the keys gained in Steam (Right click on game in left-hand menu, View Game CD Key) and activate them in your EA Games account by registering them, which makes them appear in your Origin games list for installation. (This applies to most - but not all - EA Games that are available on Origin)

You cannot use Origin codes to apply games to Steam, and Steam won't let you buy DLC for games you don't own though Steam.
