What Settings To Use For Best Performance/Quality?
Based on my laptop specs, I should be able to play this game at 1080p max settings with 120 fps right? Nope, because this game isn't optimized that well (although l4d2 is far worse and let's forget about the atrocity known as GTA 4). Too bad for me I can only play at 900p as my highest resolution and have an average range being 40-60 fps.

Lenovo IdeaPad 310 15-ABR
Form Factor: Laptop
CPU: AMD A10 9600-P 7th Gen @ 2.4 GHZ (4 Cores)
APU: AMD Radeon R5 Graphics with 512 MB VRAM
RAM: 12 GB DDR4 Memory | Storage: 128 GB SSD
OS: Windows 10 Home X64 Bit
Display: 1366 X 768 HD 15.6" LED 60 HZ
Direct X: Version 12 (Software & APU)
MSRP: $600 - $800 CAD

My current settings is set to high for everything except tree detail where it's at medium, anti-aliasing and vertical sync are disabled, lot detail is set at 2 or 3 (can't remember), all of those checkmark options are checked on, and reflection is set to mirrors only. I'm currently getting the above fps values although before when I set it to 768p with medium to high settings I got like 45-75 fps. What should I change to get even better performance?

Yes I am aware that playing beyond my laptop's native resolution is why my framerate is lower but I can't stand the pixelation. Plus, if I enable anti-aliasing at 768p I get worse performance and quality compared to 900p without MSAA. If you're wondering, no I didn't upgrade my RAM as it was like that although I did have a 1 TB HDD before.

This forum post is completely irrelevant as I have since upgraded to a gaming capable PC since January 2020. Anyone who necromances this thread for trolling, spamming, de-railing, etc., will be instantly blocked and reported. Those that are blocked will have all responses made invisible by default, which is programmed by Valve. I can now easily max out this game and get anywhere from 60-360fps in FHD (1920x1080), which depends on the time of day, location, and amount of Sims present. I have installed mods that fix bugs and boost performance, along with tweaking configuration files in order to get the game to better utilize system resources. Yes I am still playing on a laptop, but the one I'm using is built for gaming and is only thermal throttling for CPU bound games in recent months due to its age.

OS: Windows 11 Home Edition Version 23H2 CPU: Intel Core i5 9300H @ 2.4GHZ 4C/8T dGPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 MaxP iGPU: Intel UHD Graphics 630 @ 350MHZ VRAM: 3GB GDDR5 96-Bit @ 1752MHZ SDRAM: 16GB DDR4 SODIMM @ 2666MHZ SSD1: 250GB MX500 M.2 SATA @ 600MBPS SSD2: 250GB MX500 2.5" SATA @ 600MBPS API: DirectX12 (D3D 12_1) + Vulkan V1.3 VIDEO: 1920x1080 FHD 15.6" LED IPS 60HZ

I will eventually upgrade to a custom built desktop, but that's a story for another time. For anyone that isn't aware, the i5 9300H has twice the single core performance and twice the multicore performance over the A10 9600P. That CPU is equivalent to (at least for me because I won the silicon lottery) Core i7 6700K or Ryzen 5 1600X for you dinosaurs out there, and Core i3 10100F or Ryzen 3 4200G for any babies. The dGPU does seem to be inferior to GTX 1050 Ti and RX 470 in theory, but in practice (and also winning lottery) it's actually on par with GTX 1650 or RX 5300 XT. Hell, even the iGPU is roughly double the performance as my previous iGPU, but I use it when I'm not doing any intensive tasks. But my dGPU is about a dozen times faster than my past iGPU (just raw theoretical performance), which is obviously night and day; it's like comparing the RTX 4050 MaxQ with the RTX 4090 24GB.

Frame rate is not limited by refresh rate.

Frame rate is how many frames per second your GPU is producing. Refresh rate is how many times your monitor is refreshing the screen. That is, a GPU can produce more (or fewer) frames than a monitor is capable of displaying - setting a low refresh rate does not limit the frame rate on your GPU, it just limits how many times the monitor will redraw the screen.

Having a different frame rate being produced than the refresh rate is drawing (either too high or too low) is what causes screen tearing and stuttering. The purpose of vertical sync is to force the two settings to work together.

But of course, Sims 3 has a refresh setting, but no frame limit or vsync option in the game. This is why the usual advice is to use the GPU tools to limit the game's frame rate with vertical sync. (Edit to add: Also, a good idea to turn on buffering in the GPU control panel, if possible.)

Yeah I don't know about you, but before I disabled vertical sync in l4d2, not only was I unable to go past 60 fps (as my monitor was only 60 HZ), I also got lower framerate overall. Sorry to burst your bubble but the reality is that performance will be lower as the framerate is intentionally limited within the 45-60 fps range. I've tested that out with several games that allow vertical sync via in-game settings so your claim isn't 100% accurate.

I already know what vertical sync is and how it works so you don't need to educate me. Of course, depending on the game itself the performance will drop only slightly like in Portal 2 to being a huge difference like with l4d2. I'm not trying to troll you if my comments might seem a bit harsh and pessimistic; I'm just very passionate about debating and arguing.

It's not that you're harsh, you're just rude. You ask for help and when people attempt to help you, you insult them, throw it back in their face, and call it "passionate about debating".

That's OK if it works for you. Perhaps someone else here is interested in "debate" rather than just assisting others with getting their game up and running as best it can.

If you think I'm insulting you then that's your problem not mine. I think if I keep writing more you're just going to get more offended at such trivial things.

Mate, you were quite rude to him.
"Sorry to burst your bubble" is a sarcastic cocky statement.
Just say sorry and move on rather than continue to swear.

See - we tried to help you and you are just rude. Calm down kid.
Profanity gets censored by the filters in the Steam forums. If that phrase you quoted me was swearing then how come it's not censored? By the way, I've ceased being a minor several years ago.

Seriosuly, stop it.

Yeah enough of this thread derailing. Nice try with editing my post when people can clearly see the original post above you. Is this one of your alt accounts Lowbei?

Private profile...why am I not surprised? Fortunately, Steamrep still reveals some things about you that you don't want me to know.

And of course enabling vertical sync and triple buffering through the AMD Radeon Settings does nothing! :steamsad: :steamfacepalm:

personally i would say I am acting like an utter ♥♥♥♥♥♥, but tough? no.
now go make some ideas mr idea pad :)

Thanks for making my thread stay at the top with your useless trolling.
